The Settlement at the Bend of the Vakh: How Izluchinsk Came to Be

In the late 1980s, a new settlement appeared on the map of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The settlement of Izluchinsk was founded in the late 1980s as a settlement for builders of the Nizhnevartovskaya Power Plant — it was the power engineers who became the first residents of this place. At first, there were trailer parks and temporary housing, then permanent apartment buildings were constructed, and a full-fledged infrastructure formed around them.

The name of the settlement speaks for itself. The name "Izluchinsk" was given to the settlement because of its location on a bend of the Vakh River — a tributary of the Ob. The river bend determined not only the name, but also the layout of the streets, many of which stretch along the shoreline. Naberezhnaya is one of the central streets, and house number 12 is located in the very heart of the residential area.

Okunevka Embankment: A Local Gathering Place

The Okunevka River, a tributary of the Vakh, divides the settlement into two parts. The embankment along it has long become the main walking route. The main attraction of the embankment is the ornate pedestrian bridge over the Okunevka River, connecting the residential part of the settlement with the industrial zone. The bridge's design draws attention even from those who have seen it hundreds of times.

Next to the bridge is the "Vesyoly Gorodok" amusement park — families with children gather here in the evenings. And in 2024, the area was renovated: in 2024, the reconstruction of the Okunevka River embankment was completed — separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists were created. The Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker accommodates up to 300 parishioners, with a ceiling height of 8 meters. The interior of the church is spacious and bright, and the gilding on the domes shimmers in the sunlight. The church was built relatively recently — about ten years ago, but has already become the spiritual center of Izluchinsk.

House number 12 on Naberezhnaya is a typical apartment building for the settlement, surrounded by a well-maintained courtyard area. Lawns and trees provide shade on hot days, and paved paths allow comfortable movement around the courtyard in any weather.

Climate and Nature Around

Izluchinsk is located in a zone of sharply continental climate — winters here are frosty and long, summers are short but warm. The Vakh River and its tributaries freeze for several months, and spring floods are possible. In summer, the embankment fills with people: someone sunbathes on the shore, someone rides a bicycle, someone just sits on the benches.

The vegetation around is typical for Western Siberia — birches, aspens, coniferous trees. Decorative shrubs are planted in the courtyards of apartment buildings, which are covered with flowers in spring. There are also plenty of birds: sparrows, tits, crows, and migratory species arrive in spring.
