Cathedral Mosque on the Ob Embankment in Nizhnevartovsk — Online Webcam
Cathedral Mosque on the Ob Embankment
On the banks of the great Siberian river Ob, surrounded by the spacious embankment and urban development, rises the Cathedral Mosque of Nizhnevartovsk — the largest Islamic religious structure in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The building with a golden dome and four minarets has become one of the city's architectural landmarks, visible from various points along the embankment. The live webcam allows you to observe this site in real time, seeing how the lighting of the domes changes throughout the day and how busy the surrounding area is.
Construction of the mosque began back in 2001, when the first pile was driven. The project became one of the longest in the city's history — the site was listed as a long-term construction project for years due to funding problems. Only by 2015 were builders able to reach the home stretch, and final completion of the work stretched over subsequent years. Ultimately, the project budget was estimated at an amount comparable to 100 million dollars, with assistance coming from both the Muslim community and major oil companies in the region.
Architecture and Interior Layout
The Cathedral Mosque of Nizhnevartovsk is not just a prayer hall but an entire complex. It features three prayer halls, the largest of which can accommodate up to 400 worshippers on days of holiday prayers. Loudspeakers are installed on all four minarets, so the call to prayer can be heard at a considerable distance along the embankment. A madrasa for 50 people was planned to be built near the mosque, which was intended to become the center of religious education in the region.
The mosque's golden dome has become its hallmark. In clear weather, it reflects sunlight, creating a bright accent against the Siberian sky. The white walls and slender minarets give the structure a celebratory yet light silhouette that contrasts well with the surrounding urban development. The location on the banks of the Ob adds picturesque quality to the landscape — during the spring flood, water approaches close to the embankment, and the reflections of the domes in the river create one of the city's most photographed views.
60 Let Oktyabrya Street — Formerly Naberezhnaya
The webcam is installed on building 44 along 60 Let Oktyabrya Street — one of Nizhnevartovsk's central thoroughfares. This street has its own history: until 1977, it was called Naberezhnaya (Embankment) and connected the city center with the bank of the Ob. The renaming in honor of the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution gave it a new name, but its function as a link between residential quarters and the river was preserved.
Building 44 is a typical 16-story panel building constructed in 1985 with a total area of 10,472.2 sq. m. It is located in the Pribrezhny-3 microdistrict and is part of the residential development that forms the background of the broadcast. It is from the height of this building that a panoramic view of the mosque and the embankment opens up, making the camera a convenient observation point for both locations simultaneously.
"To the Soldiers-Fellow Countrymen" Memorial and Sports Glory Square
60 Let Oktyabrya Street is rich in memorial sites. At the intersection with Prospekt Pobedy in 1978, the "To the Soldiers-Fellow Countrymen" memorial was dedicated to Nizhnevartovsk residents who perished during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. The authors of the monument were sculptors B. L. Yermishin and B. V. Makovetsky, and the architect was B. V. Kazakov. The memorial became a place for commemorative events and flower-laying on days of military history.
In 2002, Sports Glory Square appeared on the street, located near the approach to the Central Stadium. Its central element became the "Star of Nizhnevartovsk Sports" monument, which immortalizes the names of outstanding athletes of the city. In 2021, a personalized star of Olympic champion Albert Batyrgaziev was installed here, underscoring the significance of the Nizhnevartovsk wrestling school at the world level.
The Ob Embankment as a Recreational Area
The Ob River within Nizhnevartovsk is not only a transport artery but also the main recreation spot for city residents. The embankment running along 60 Let Oktyabrya Street connects several key sites: Victory Park, Komsomolskoye Lake, and the monument to the city's first settlers. In the warm season, families stroll here, cafes and attractions operate, and in winter the embankment becomes a walking route with views of the snow-covered river.
The coastal zone is visible from the camera in the left part of the frame. The wide channel of the Ob creates a sense of spaciousness despite the dense urban development. On the opposite bank, the industrial zone with port cranes can be distinguished — a reminder that Nizhnevartovsk remains an important transport hub of Western Siberia.
Nizhnevartovsk — A City of Oil and Gas
The city itself was founded in 1909 as a settlement at a railway station, but its rapid development came in the 1960s with the start of industrial oil production. Today, Nizhnevartovsk is one of the largest cities in Yugra with a population of about 280,000 people. The city-forming enterprise historically has been Nizhnevartovskneftegaz, whose administrative building was located at house No. 37 on the same 60 Let Oktyabrya Street.
The multinational composition of the population determined the appearance in the city of not only Orthodox churches but also Islamic religious structures. The cathedral mosque became a response to the spiritual needs of the Muslim community, a significant part of which consists of Tatars, Azerbaijanis, people from Central Asia, and other peoples who came to Western Siberia for the oil fields.
What the Camera Shows
The online broadcast from the webcam at 60 Let Oktyabrya Street, 44 provides a panoramic view of several objects simultaneously. At the center of attention is the cathedral mosque with a golden dome and four minarets, located on the banks of the Ob. In front of the mosque is a spacious parking area where parishioners' cars can always be seen. Along the embankment runs a road with active traffic — the street remains one of the transport arteries of the district.
In the foreground of the frame is a dirt road, green plantings, and trees that in summer create a dense green frame for the broadcast. In the background, residential multi-story buildings are visible — the same panel development of Pribrezhny-3, of which building 44 is also a part. On the horizon, beyond the river, the port cranes of the industrial zone are distinguishable — a characteristic detail of the Nizhnevartovsk landscape. The camera operates in real time, allowing you to observe everything happening without delay.
