Where Barton Aerodrome is located

Barton Aerodrome (ICAO: EGCB) is a general aviation airport located in Barton-upon-Irwell, Eccles, Salford, Greater Manchester, 9.3 km west of Manchester. It is the closest aerodrome to the city centre, making it a convenient base for light aviation and helicopter flights. History of Barton Aerodrome

Construction of the aerodrome began in autumn 1928, when Manchester Corporation selected the site for a new municipal aerodrome to replace the temporary Wythenshawe aerodrome. The grass airfield and a large hangar were completed in January 1930, when the first passenger flight took place. This made Barton the first purpose-built municipal aerodrome in the United Kingdom.

In 1938, Ringway Airport (now Manchester Airport) opened, after which Barton lost its status as Manchester's main airport and transitioned to general aviation. During World War II, additional buildings were constructed at the aerodrome; after the war, it returned to civilian aviation. On 3 April 2023, the aerodrome was renamed Manchester Barton Aerodrome (previously known as City Airport and City Airport Manchester).

Aerodrome Infrastructure

The aerodrome is operated by City Airport Ltd and serves as a home base for several fixed-wing and helicopter operators, as well as the Lancashire Aero Club. The aerodrome holds CAA licence number P886, permitting flights for public transport of passengers and flight training; the aerodrome is not licensed for night operations.

The site features grass runways, taxiways, hangars, and industrial buildings. Several historic buildings are listed by English Heritage as Grade II; the aerodrome is described as "the most complete surviving example of an early municipal aerodrome in the United Kingdom." On the right side of the field, a marked grass strip and a red-and-yellow windsock are visible.

Transport Significance for the Region

The aerodrome is positioned as the leading general aviation aerodrome in North West England. It provides training pipelines for professional pilots and aerodrome personnel, supporting the sustainability of UK air transport. The aerodrome is frequently used by Manchester United Football Club for flights.

Visitors have access to free parking, a viewing and picnic area, and refuelling for light aircraft and helicopters. The aerodrome is approximately 20 minutes by road from Manchester city centre via the M60, junction 11, then following signs to Irlam.

Operating Hours and Activity

The aerodrome operates during daylight hours (not licensed for night flights). Peak general aviation activity occurs on weekends and during the summer season, when training flights and private flights increase. On weekdays, the control tower operations and aircraft movements on taxiways can be observed.
