History of the memorial complex

The official name of the memorial is the memorial ensemble "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad". The resolution on its creation was adopted in 1958 by the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, and construction began a year later under the direction of sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich. Before the work began, more than 4,000 mines and shells were defused on the kurgan — the war had left a deadly legacy here.

Most scholars do not associate the name with Mamai Khan. According to one version, the word "mamai" means "hilly" — that is, "hilly hill." According to another, it is translated from Tibetan as "mother of the world." There is also a version that the name is associated with ancient camps and outposts of Mongol-Tatar troops from the time of the Golden Horde in the 14th century. Be that as it may, today the name "Mamaev Kurgan" is known to every Russian as a symbol of courage and resilience.

Mamaev Kurgan is located in the Central District of Volgograd, on the right bank of the Volga River. You can get here by public transport — tram No. 1, trolleybus No. 1, No. 7, No. 8, bus No. 37. The "Mamaev Kurgan" stop is located in close proximity to the entrance to the memorial complex.
