Magadan — a city on the edge of the Sea of Okhotsk

Magadan stretches across the southeastern part of Russia, on the shore of Nagayev Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk. This city is the administrative center of Magadan Oblast and the largest port in the northeast of the country. Founded in 1929 as a settlement for builders of the Kolyma Highway, Magadan quickly grew into a vital transportation and industrial hub of the region. Today, with a population of about 90,000 people, the city remains the gateway to the Kolyma region — a territory famous for its gold mines and harsh climate.

Magadanka River Embankment — history and modernity

The Magadanka River Embankment officially appeared on the city map on September 9, 1980 by decision No. 693 of the Magadan City Executive Committee. Since then, this area has transformed from an unkempt riverbank into one of the city's key recreational zones.

The embankment has been tested by the elements more than once — floods of the Magadanka River eroded the banks, but each time the area was restored and improved. Today, the embankment features landscaped walking areas, children's and sports playgrounds, and observation decks. The building on the embankment houses the VSTK «Podvig», and one of the notable landmarks is the Silver House hotel.

Along the bay shore runs an ecological trail leading through a birch forest to the picturesque valley of the Koreysky Klyuch stream. This is a popular hiking route among locals and visitors to the city.

Yakutskaya Street — the city's transportation artery

Yakutskaya Street is one of Magadan's central thoroughfares, crossing the city's territory and connecting residential neighborhoods with the embankment. The intersection of Yakutskaya and the Magadanka River Embankment is a busy area with a constant flow of vehicles and pedestrians. The road is equipped with road markings, pedestrian crossings, traffic signs, and street lighting.

From this intersection, there is a view of winter Magadan — an urban landscape with characteristic mountain relief and tundra vegetation on the slopes. Engineering pipelines running along the hillside serve as a reminder that Magadan is a city with developed life-support infrastructure adapted to the conditions of the Far North.

Mayak Park and coastal landmarks

On the embankment lies Mayak Park — Magadan's largest park and the main outdoor recreation center. It features sports and children's playgrounds, a dendropark with art installations, and a stage for city celebrations. The park's observation decks offer a stunning view of Nagayev Bay and the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk.

Near the lighthouse, there is a landscaped embankment with concert and children's playgrounds. The lighthouse on the shore of Nagayev Bay is still operational — it continues to serve as a navigation landmark for vessels entering the port.

Magadan Sea Port — the gateway to Kolyma

The Magadanka River flows into Nagayev Bay, forming an extensive delta at its mouth. On the shores of the bay lies the Magadan Sea Commercial Port, which entered operation on December 6, 1933. It is the first major port in the northeast of Russia and maintains strategic importance for supplying the entire Kolyma region.

Tidal fluctuations in the port of Magadan reach five meters, creating challenging conditions for navigation. In winter, the waterway freezes over, and the port operates with the assistance of icebreakers. During the 2025 winter navigation season, the port carried out 112 icebreaker operations, during which 118 vessels were escorted, including 56 by the leading method.

Nature and landscape around the Magadanka

The Magadanka River originates in the spurs of the Kolyma Highlands and carries its waters through the city to Nagayev Bay. Within the city limits, it is characterized by a relatively narrow channel and calm flow in the flat sections. The riverbanks within the urban area are partially reinforced and partially preserve the natural landscape with tundra vegetation.

The mountainous terrain surrounding Magadan creates a unique visual contrast: urban development stands alongside bare slopes covered with shrubs and lichens. Engineering utilities — heating mains and pipelines — are laid along the slopes and are an integral part of Magadan's cityscape.
