Magadan is a city in the northeast of Russia, the administrative center of Magadan Oblast. It is located on the shore of Taui Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk, on the isthmus connecting the Staritsky Peninsula with the mainland. The city's population is approximately 89,000 people (2024). It is one of the largest port cities in the Russian Far East located beyond the Arctic Circle.

The city lies in a zone of permafrost, which imposes specific requirements on construction and architecture. Despite the harsh climate, Magadan is actively developing, and its residential areas continue to be improved.

History of Yagodnaya Street

Yagodnaya Street is one of the thoroughfares in the New Magadan residential district. The street name was officially approved on February 21, 1958 by Decision No. 69 of the Magadan City Executive Committee. At the same time, other streets in the district were named: Beregovaya, Sadovaya, Mayskaya, Snezhnaya, Lugovaya, Razdolnaya, Pionerskaya — all located in the area of the 23rd kilometer of the main highway.

The name "Yagodnaya" (meaning "Berry") fits into the tradition of naming Magadan streets after nature — many streets in this district received names associated with berries, flowers, and seasons. This creates a certain poetry in the city's toponymy, despite its harsh northern character.

New Magadan District: development of the 1970s–1980s

Yakutskaya Street and its surrounding neighborhoods, including Yagodnaya Street, were actively developed in the 1970s–1980s as part of the "New Magadan" residential complex. This district became part of a large-scale urban expansion project that began implementation as early as 1963.

The typical buildings of that era are Khrushchyovkas and Brezhnevkas — panel and brick houses 5 and 9 stories high. The architecture of the district is functional and concise, characteristic of the Soviet period of construction in the Far North. The buildings were designed taking into account severe climatic conditions: strong winds, low temperatures, and snow loads.

Yagodnaya — Yakutskaya Intersection: a transportation hub

The intersection of Yagodnaya and Yakutskaya Streets is an important transportation hub of New Magadan. Public transit routes connecting the residential district with the city center pass through it. In particular, Route No. 16 runs here, heading to the central part of Magadan.

Yakutskaya Street is a multi-lane thoroughfare with road markings, carrying intense traffic flow. The intersection is unregulated, requiring increased attention from drivers and pedestrians. Along the roads there are bus stops, retail outlets, and service facilities.

Colorful facades: the improvement program of the 2010s

One of the distinctive features of Yagodnaya Street is its bright multi-story residential buildings with colorful facades. This is the result of an improvement program implemented in the 2010s. Typical panel buildings were painted in vibrant colors: yellow, blue, green, and red.

This practice of painting facades is common in many Russian cities, but in Magadan it took on special meaning. Against the backdrop of the gray northern sky, long winters, and uniform buildings, the bright houses create a positive visual appearance of the residential area. The colorful facades have become a kind of calling card for this part of the city.

Geographical location and natural features

Magadan is located between Nagayevo and Gertner Bays on the shore of Taui Bay. The city is surrounded by hills and mountain ranges that are clearly visible from many vantage points. The terrain is hilly, creating interesting panoramic views.

The climate is subarctic with maritime features. Winters are long and cold, summers are short and cool. In winter, temperatures can drop below −30°C, and snow cover reaches significant depths. These climatic features affect road conditions and the city's appearance at different times of the year.
