History: From Bashanta to Gorodovikovsk

The settlement was founded as the village of Bashanta — named after the river that still flows through the city and appears in local place names. The old name has not been forgotten: it is borne by ponds and in stories told by longtime residents. After the deportation of the Kalmyk population in 1944–1957, Bashanta remained the center of the Western District of Rostov Oblast, which was returned to Kalmykia in 1957.

In 1970, the boundaries of the settlement were expanded, adjacent territories were annexed, and in 1971 it received city status and a new name — in honor of Oka Ivanovich Gorodovikov, a hero of the Civil War and one of the most famous Kalmyks in the country's history. A monument to Gorodovikov stands in the city that now bears his name.

The main museum site is the Gorodovikovsky branch of the National Museum of the Republic of Kalmykia. It is housed in a building constructed in 1917, and the museum exhibition opened here in 1979.
