The town was granted its status on July 5, 1956, although the settlement's history dates back to the mid-18th century.

The name Kurtamysh is of Turkic origin and translates as "bee place." In 1756, the sloboda became the administrative center of the Kurtamyshsky Uyezd, which established its role as an important settlement in the region.
