Gorodovikovsk — the capital of western Kalmykia

Gorodovikovsk is one of the three cities of the Republic of Kalmykia, located in the steppe zone on the northwestern periphery of the Stavropol Upland. The distance to Elista is 234 kilometers to the west. The city's population does not exceed 9 thousand people, and the settlement area is 175 square kilometers. Despite its modest size, Gorodovikovsk plays an important role in the region's life as the administrative center of Gorodovikovsky District.

The climate here is continental: hot summers and windy, relatively mild winters. The city is located near the border with Rostov Oblast and Stavropol Krai, making it a kind of gateway between Kalmykia and the southern regions of Russia. Oka Gorodovikov — a legendary figure

The city is named after Oka Ivanovich Gorodovikov — an outstanding Soviet military leader who rose from cavalry squadron commander to colonel general. In 1940, he was awarded the rank of colonel general, and in 1958 he became a Hero of the Soviet Union. Gorodovikov commanded the 2nd Cavalry Army during the Civil War and was a close associate of Marshal Budyonny.

Until 1971, the city was called Bashanta — named after the local river and the original settlement of Kalmyk nomads who chose a sedentary life as early as 1865. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR dated February 8, 1971, the workers' settlement of Bashanta was transformed into a city and renamed in honor of the famous native son.

Central Park and the Monument

In Gorodovikovsk's Central Park, there is a monument to Oka Ivanovich Gorodovikov — it is this monument that is visible on the webcam broadcast. The statue stands on a stone pedestal in the middle of a landscaped park area. Concrete pedestrian paths are laid around the monument, benches and modern white street lamps are installed. Birch and spruce trees dominate the landscaping, and lawn areas create a cozy atmosphere.

Church of the Holy Archangel Michael

The parish was opened in 1994, when the Gorodovikovsky District administration transferred a long-closed kindergarten building for use as a church. The brick building from 1961 was restored and converted into a temple. The bell tower was added later, and one of the five bells weighs 150 kilograms.

The church is located on Sadovaya Street and is active — regular services, baptisms, and holiday services are held here. The golden dome is clearly visible from various points in the city and serves as a landmark for first-time visitors to Gorodovikovsk.
