During the Polish intervention, the territory experienced severe trials. During the Polish assault in 1611, a breach was made in the Smolensk fortress wall at this location, through which Sigismund III — King of Poland — entered the city. After the liberation of Smolensk, the destroyed fortress gradually fell into disrepair, and its moat filled with water, forming the future pond.

The modern appearance of the park and the pond is associated with the name of governor Alexander Grigorievich Lopatin, by whose order in 1873 a garden was laid on the site of the former Royal Fortress. With the opening of Lopatin Garden in 1874, the pond became a place of summer recreation for townspeople — walks, boat rides, and picnics on the shore began to be arranged here.

Here stands the Monument to the Defenders of Smolensk of August 4–5, 1812, unveiled in 1841. The author of the monument's design was Antonio Adamini, an Italian architect who worked in Russia.

In 1835, Nicholas I ordered the installation of 16 standard cast-iron monuments at the sites of the most important battles of the Patriotic War of 1812. The monument in Lopatin Garden is the only surviving twin-monument from the tsarist era. The remaining 15 monuments were destroyed during Soviet times, making the Smolensk monument truly unique.
