Barnaul River Station — the city's water gates

The Barnaul River Station stands on the high bank of the Ob in the very center of the city, where the Barnaulka River flows into it. This building is one of the city's landmarks, clearly visible when entering via the New Bridge. The online webcam shows not only the building itself but also the picturesque embankment, the river surface, and the opposite bank.

The history of this location began long before the stone building appeared. Back in the 19th century, there was a pier from which timber and grain were shipped by raft. The first river station building appeared here on May 9, 1939 — it was a wooden structure built in about a year. Water transport was developing, and the city needed full-fledged river gates.

Soviet Modernist Architecture: The 1985 Building

The building that residents and tourists are accustomed to seeing was built in 1985. The project was designed by architect Viktor Vladimirovich Kazarinov, who had led the architectural direction at the Altaygrazhdanproyekt Institute since 1977. The building was designed in the spirit of Soviet modernism — strict lines, large-scale layout, functionality.

The main interior decoration was a unique Florentine mosaic "Labor and Nature of Altai" with an area of 46 square meters. At the time of its creation, it was the largest Florentine mosaic in the USSR. The panel adorned the waiting hall and became a true landmark. During the demolition of the building, the mosaic was carefully dismantled and transferred to the Altai Krai Art Museum.

Demolition and Construction Plans: Two Towers on the Ob Bank

In 2022, the dismantling of the river station building began. A residential complex of two 27-story towers is planned for the site. The project was named "Barnaul. Riverside Complex." The high-rises will be painted in a combination of white and dark terracotta colors and placed on a shared podium. The podium floor will house river station ticket offices and a ramp for river transport, as well as a wide arch for pedestrians to pass through to the embankment.

Even more ambitious projects were initially discussed — towers over 40 stories high, up to 150 meters. However, the project was adjusted: the buildings were made 17 stories lower than the original plan so they wouldn't look too massive against the backdrop of the historic development. There are no height restrictions in this area, but the Barnaul Urban Planning Council approved the more restrained option.

Ob Embankment and Nagorny Park: 2018 Improvement

The area along the river near the river station underwent major changes in 2018. The improvement of the Ob embankment and Nagorny Park was completed in October 2018. The project was funded with 106 million rubles. Walking areas, stairs, an amphitheater, and tile covering over an area of more than 10,000 square meters appeared.

Nagorny Park became a tourist attraction. Terraces with panoramic views of the Ob and surroundings were arranged here. And on the slope appeared a landmark "Barnaul" sign — letters 7 meters high and almost 20 meters long, stylized after the Hollywood sign. The total area of the sign is 750 square meters.

Holidays and Events at the River Station

The River Station traditionally became the main festive venue in Barnaul. Large-scale events were held here for City Day and Russia Day. In 2015, an air show by the Strizhi group, a concert program, and a fireworks festival were planned here.

Aviation shows over the Ob became a hallmark of celebrating Russian Air Fleet Day. On August 18, demonstration flights of sports aircraft were held over the River Station. In 2012, "Victory May" festive venues operated on the premises, and in 2019, a large concert was held on June 12 for Russia Day.

Lenin Avenue and the New Bridge: Transport Accessibility

The River Station is located where Lenin Avenue — the main thoroughfare of Barnaul — reaches the river. The bridge along Lenin Avenue is equipped with a walking area, offering views of the station and the embankment. From the bridge, to the right you can see the river port building, the Parus Business Center built in 2006, and the Aquamarine residential complex. To the left are Nagorny Park and terraces descending to the water.

This location is an important urban planning hub, connecting the business center with the recreational zone. The improved embankment, about a kilometer long, will become a new public space for residents and tourists.
