Tower 55 originally served multiple "Fallen Flags" — defunct railroads: Cotton Belt (SP), Frisco, Katy, MoPac (T&P), Rock Island, and Santa Fe. The tower closed in the mid-1990s and is now used for a new function.

More than 100 trains pass through Tower 55 daily from five railroads, including BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, Fort Worth & Western Railroad (FWWR), as well as Amtrak's Texas Eagle twice a day. This makes Tower 55 one of the busiest railroad diamonds/interlockings in the United States outside of Chicago.

Eliminating grade-level crossings in the Tower 55 area reduces delays for motorists and pedestrians by 100,000 hours annually. This scale of impact demonstrates the strategic importance of the project for urban mobility.
