Lake Tahoe Airport: A Runway in the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) is a unique airfield situated at an elevation of 1,911 meters above sea level surrounded by the Sierra Nevada ridges. History: From the 1960 Olympics to the Present Day

The airport was built in 1959 ahead of the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. The original runway was 5,900 feet long, but by 1962 it had been extended to the current 8,541 feet (2,603 m). In 1963, local carrier Paradise Airlines began passenger service, though commercial operations ceased in the 1980s. Since then, the airport has primarily served general aviation, handling approximately 25,000–30,000 takeoffs and landings annually.

Airfield Infrastructure

The airport covers an area of 348 acres (141 hectares) and has a single runway 18/36. Its specifications: length of 8,544 feet (2,603 m), width of 100 feet (30 m), asphalt surface. The airfield is located about 3 miles (5 km) southwest of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California. Transportation access is provided via US Route 50 and Tahoe Valley Road.

Role in the Regional Transportation System

Although Lake Tahoe Airport does not have scheduled passenger service, it remains an important element of transportation infrastructure. Commercial flights for the Lake Tahoe region are handled through Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and Sacramento International Airport. TVL Airport serves private aircraft, charter flights, general aviation, and acts as a base for mountain rescue operations.

Weather Conditions and Meteorology

The location at over 1,900 meters in the Sierra Nevada creates specific weather conditions. In winter, heavy snowfall and limited visibility are possible; in summer, clear weather with good visibility of the mountain ranges.
