Golden Embankment: Three Names of One Street

On the bank of the Pskova River, at its confluence with the Velikaya, lies an embankment that Pskov residents call Golden. This informal name caught on in the 2000s thanks to a residential complex built here. But this street has a long history and several names. Officially, it has been called Soviet Embankment since 1948, and before that it was known as "American" and even "Flea Market."

At the beginning of the 20th century, wooden buildings stood here that regularly suffered from floods. Hence the first nickname — "Flea Market." Then, in the mid-19th century, a bridge designed by American engineer Town appeared, and the embankment became "American." Today, only stone foundations and archival memories remain from those times.

The main decoration of the embankment is the panorama of the Krom, as the Pskov Kremlin is called. From this bank, there is a view of the Trinity Cathedral and the Flat Tower from the 15th century. The white bell tower with arched openings, the cathedral domes, the fortress wall with a tower — all of this can be seen in detail.

The Kremlin stands on a cape formed by the confluence of two rivers. This strategic position made it an impregnable fortress in the Middle Ages. Today, the walls and towers are under state protection as a cultural heritage site of federal significance. The "Golden Embankment" quarter falls within the boundaries of the Kremlin ensemble's protected zone.

19th Century Architectural Ensemble

Along the embankment stands a row of buildings in the 19th-century architectural style. These are former merchant houses, fish shops, and the Rozhkovy trading baths. Stone facades with stucco moldings, tall windows, wrought-iron balconies — everything recalls the merchant past of Pskov.

The pedestrian promenade, about 700 meters long, is paved with tiles and cobblestones. Flower beds and street lamps on tall posts stretch along it. This is one of the favorite walking spots for Pskov residents and visitors to the city.

Monument to Princess Olga

Near the Golden Embankment, on Olga Victory Square, stands a monument to Princess Olga. The height of the sculpture and pedestal is over 8 meters. The figure of the princess is adorned with a halo, and the pedestal features 12 Pskov saints. This is a tribute to the woman who baptized Rus in the 10th century, a century before Vladimir.

It is just a few minutes' walk from the monument to the embankment. Many tourists start their city tour from here, with a view of the river and the Kremlin.

The Velikaya River and Its Tributary the Pskova

The embankment is located on the bank of the Pskova River at its confluence with the Velikaya. This is not just a picturesque corner — it is an important waterway that served as a trade artery for centuries. In the 13th century, the "German Bank" — the settlement of German merchants from the Hanseatic League — was located on this shore.

Today, the river flows calmly, reflecting clouds and cathedral domes. In spring, during the flood, it spreads wider, but the embankment remains above water thanks to the high bank.

From Trading Shops to a Walking Zone

Historically, the embankment was the city's trading center. Merchant houses, fish shops, and baths stood here. Trade was conducted directly from boats moored to the shore. Today, the purpose of the street has changed: it is now a walking zone with hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

In the evenings, the embankment lights up with the warm glow of street lamps. Live music from open terraces, the smell of coffee and fresh pastries — the atmosphere here is made for leisurely walks.
