The Feat of the 6th Company: The History Behind the Square's Name
The name of the square is directly linked to the tragic events in Chechnya. Paratroopers Heroes Square is named in honor of the feat of the 6th Company of the 104th Parachute Regiment of the 76th Guards Airborne Division. These soldiers engaged in an unequal battle with militants in the Argun Gorge.
On February 29, 2000, 90 fighters of the 6th Company entered into an unequal battle with militants of Khattab, Idris, and Shamil Basayev in the Argun Gorge of Chechnya; on average there were 20 bandits for each paratrooper, 84 out of 90 were killed. This is one of the most well-known episodes of the Second Chechen War, which became a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice of Russian servicemen.
In memory of the fallen, a memorial sign was installed on the square. The memorial to the Paratrooper Heroes on the square was installed in 2004, designed by architect V. Shulyakovsky. It is located on the central island of the roundabout and is clearly visible from the online camera.
Bridge Named After the 50th Anniversary of October: An Engineering Structure Over the Velikaya River
In the background of the webcam broadcast from Paratroopers Heroes Square, the bridge over the Velikaya River is clearly visible. This is an important transport structure connecting the center of Pskov with the Zavelichye microdistrict.
The Bridge Named After the 50th Anniversary of October was built according to the design of the "Lengiprotransmost" institute and opened in October 1967; its length is 229.1 meters. The decision to build it was made on July 5, 1961, to relieve the city center of freight transport and improve connections with Zavelichye.
In 2016–2017, a major overhaul of the bridge was carried out, which extended its service life and ensured safe traffic. From the online camera at Paratroopers Heroes Square, you can see how cars move across the bridge in both directions, connecting the two parts of the city.
Victory Park and the T-34 Tank Monument
Adjacent to Paratroopers Heroes Square is Victory Park — a memorial area dedicated to the liberation of Pskov from Nazi invaders. The T-34-85 tank monument "To the Liberators of Pskov" is installed in Victory Park near Paratroopers Heroes Square on a high pedestal at the site where soldiers of the 374th Rifle Regiment crossed the Velikaya River.
Originally, the tank was located at the Pskov railway station, but was later moved to its current location. Today it is one of the landmarks of the memorial area and is clearly visible from the square.
Victory Park also features an Eternal Flame and Victory Alley with memorial signs, including those dedicated to Guards Junior Sergeant V.A. Shvetsov and Guards Private M.V. Travin. This recreation and memorial area directly adjoins Paratroopers Heroes Square, creating a unified memorial complex.
Ferris Wheel and "Magic Mountain" Park
In the upper left part of the frame from the webcam at Paratroopers Heroes Square, a large Ferris wheel is visible. The 50-meter-high Ferris wheel is located in the "Magic Mountain" amusement park near the square and serves as its landmark.
This is a modern attraction opened in 2024. From the top of the Ferris wheel, there is a panorama of the historic center of Pskov and the Velikaya River. Although the wheel does not carry particular symbolic significance as a monument, it has become a popular recreation spot for locals and tourists, as well as a noticeable part of the cityscape visible from the online camera.
