On September 22, 1973, a symbolic peg with a sign reading "Yagelnoye" was driven into the ground at the site of the future city — that was the name of the settlement at first. The location of the future city was personally chosen by the USSR Minister of the Gas Industry Sabit Atayevich Orujev, who selected a point on the banks of the Yevoyakha River. On August 18, 1975, the settlement of Novy Urengoy appeared on the map of the USSR, and it received city status in 1980. Even earlier, in June 1966, the first exploratory well was drilled at the site of the future city by a team led by foreman Polupanov, uncovering one of the largest gas fields in the world.
