This green zone is located in the central part of the city and welcomes thousands of visitors every day. The real-time camera shows a multi-lane road with moving traffic, a marked crosswalk, a bus stop with a shelter, and a parking area. Novy Urengoy is a city beyond the Arctic Circle, where green spaces hold special value. Friendship Park covers an area of 6.5 hectares, of which 3 hectares are preserved as natural tundra. This unique combination of a landscaped area and pristine northern nature makes the park a magnet for residents and visitors alike.
History of the Park's Creation
Friendship Park was created in 2000 on the site of an abandoned territory. The idea of transforming a wasteland into a full-fledged recreational zone emerged as a tribute to the multinational workforce that built Novy Urengoy in the harsh conditions of the Far North. At the center of the park stands a stone with a memorial plaque dedicated to the pioneers — people of different nationalities whose hands built the city.
The name "Friendship" was chosen for a reason: it symbolizes the unity of peoples who together developed the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Today, the park is not just a place for walks, but a living monument to the labor feat of the builders of one of the country's largest gas production centers.
Art Objects and Landmarks
One of the park's main art installations is the colorful illuminated fountain, which is visible on the live stream. In the evening, the fountain transforms into a light show that attracts both children and adults. Next to the fountain stands a metal sculptural composition that has become the park's signature landmark.
Along the park's alleys, wooden animal sculptures are placed, which are especially popular with young visitors. Decorative flower beds with bright bloats create a contrast with the surrounding tundra vegetation. Curved walkways, comfortable benches, and well-maintained lawns make strolling enjoyable at any time of year.
In 2024, lighting throughout the entire park was launched in test mode. Now, during evening and dark hours, the alleys, trees, and art objects are illuminated, creating an atmosphere of coziness and safety. This is especially relevant for Novy Urengoy, where the polar night lasts more than a month.
Recreation Zones and Active Leisure
The park's territory is divided into 15 themed zones, each designed for a specific type of recreation. Every day, the park is visited by more than 5,000 people — one of the highest attendance rates among urban parks in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
For active recreation enthusiasts, the park features: a skate park, playgrounds and sports courts, bike paths, and running tracks. Children's play complexes are designed for different age groups, and sports courts are suitable for both amateurs and professional training. Bike paths connect different parts of the park, allowing for long cycling rides.
Quiet relaxation zones are equipped with benches under the shade of trees, where you can read a book or simply enjoy the fresh air. Decorative flower beds with annual and perennial plants adorn the alleys from spring through autumn.
Seasonal Transformations of the Park
Friendship Park changes with the seasons but remains attractive year-round. In summer, there is lush greenery, fountains are running, and families with children stroll along the alleys. In autumn, the trees turn golden and crimson, creating a picturesque backdrop for photographs.
In winter, the park turns into a real fairy tale. Every year in December, the "Hot Ice" ice sculpture festival takes place here. Masters create ice compositions on themes of the city, pioneers, and northern nature. These fragile works of art attract hundreds of viewers and become a decoration of winter Novy Urengoy.
During the polar night, which lasts from December 17 to January 24, the park's lighting takes on special significance. The bright lights of the fountain and alleys create a sense of warmth and light during the darkest days of the year. And during the polar day (from June 8 to July 6), the park never plunges into darkness — it is always bright and bustling with people.
Events and Celebrations
Friendship Park is the main venue for mass events in Novy Urengoy. On City Day, from 3:00 PM, the park hosts master classes, Zumba, face painting, and concert programs. The park's territory accommodates thousands of spectators, and the stage is set up so that it is visible from any alley.
In addition to city celebrations, the park regularly hosts sports competitions, festivals, and fairs. The skate park attracts young people, and the running tracks are used for organizing amateur races. In winter, an ice rink is set up on the grounds, becoming another attraction.
The recommended visit duration is 2–4 hours, and this applies to any time of year. Before visiting, it is worth checking the operating schedule on the city's official resources, as access to some zones may be restricted during major events.
Features of the Northern Climate
Novy Urengoy is located at the 56th parallel north, and the climate here is harsh. Winter lasts more than seven months, temperatures drop below −40°C, and winds can reach hurricane force. Despite this, Friendship Park remains functional year-round.
For visitor comfort during the cold season, the park is equipped with warm pavilions and food service points. Paths are regularly cleared of snow, and during icy conditions, they are treated with anti-icing materials. The lighting launched in 2024 not only beautifies the park but also enhances safety during dark hours.
In summer, despite the short season, the park delights with an abundance of greenery and flowers. The white nights, when the sun barely dips below the horizon, create a special atmosphere for evening walks. During this time, the park is especially crowded — residents rush to enjoy the warmth and fresh air.
