Gornyak — A Settlement in the Altai Foothills
Gornyak is an urban-type settlement in Loktevsky District, Altai Krai, located in the southern part of the region near the border with Kazakhstan. The settlement was founded in the mid-20th century in connection with the development of the Korkinskoye iron ore deposit and still remains one of the smallest populated places in the krai, with a population of about 3,000 people.
Despite its modest size, Gornyak has its own infrastructure and public spaces, including the central square — a place of recreation for residents and the settlement's calling card.
Location and Climate
The settlement is located in the foothill zone of the Altai Mountains, which determines its climate characteristics. Winters here are frosty and long, while summers are warm but short. The square in Gornyak is one of the few landscaped public spaces where residents can spend time outdoors during the warm season.
Thanks to its location in Loktevsky District, Gornyak is surrounded by steppe and forest-steppe landscapes typical of the southwestern part of Altai Krai.
The Square as a Public Space
The town square in Gornyak is a landscaped area with walkways, green spaces, and recreational elements. Such spaces in small populated places often become a center of attraction for local residents: families with children walk here, neighbors meet, and retirees spend their leisure time.
The presence of a children's playground with sports equipment makes the square attractive for families with children. Decorative arches and street lighting create a cozy atmosphere in the evening.
Landscaping and Greenery
The square's territory includes paved walkways, lawn areas, and young coniferous trees planted along the fence. This approach to landscaping is typical for small towns in Altai Krai: coniferous species tolerate the local climate well and maintain their decorative appeal year-round.
A green mesh fence separates the pedestrian zone from the roadway, ensuring the safety of visitors. Orange decorative arches serve as an accent design element and are clearly visible against the green plantings.
The Square in Winter and Summer
The square looks different in different seasons. In summer, the lawns turn green, flowers bloom, and the walkways fill with people. In winter, the area is covered with snow, coniferous trees create a picturesque contrast against the white background, and street lamps illuminate the snowy alleys.
The children's playground empties in the cold season, but the walkways are still used for walks — Gornyak residents value the opportunity to spend time outdoors even on frosty days.
