History of the Site: From the Moskvich Plant to a Residential Neighborhood

The territory where Metropoliya now stands holds nearly a century of industrial history. The Moskvich plant was founded in 1930 in the Textile Workers settlement on what was then Ostapovskoye Highway — today known as Volgogradsky Prospekt. For the first ten years, the enterprise was engaged in screwdriver assembly of Ford automobiles, and on December 4, 1946, the first mass-produced Moskvich-400 rolled off the line, based on the German Opel Kadett K38. Part of the production equipment was received by the USSR after the war as trophies.

In 1968, the enterprise was renamed AZLK — the Lenin Komsomol Automobile Plant. Over decades of operation, the plant produced millions of automobiles, and the four-millionth Moskvich rolled off the assembly line in September 1986. In Belgium, Soviet cars were assembled from knock-down kits at the Scaldia enterprise, and Moskvich vehicles were successfully sold in Western European markets. The famous MZMA 400-422 van with a wooden body frame, produced in a run of 11,129 units, earned the nickname "Buratino" among the people.

Automobile production ceased in 2001, and the formal liquidation of the plant took place in 2010. After AZLK's bankruptcy in 2006, the territory was divided among three major owners: Avtotor, Avtoframos, and the Moscow government. The old territory near the Volgogradsky Prospekt metro station was almost entirely demolished to make way for residential development.

Metropoliya Residential Complex: Architecture and Scale

Metropoliya is one of the most ambitious redevelopment projects in Moscow, developed by MR Group. The complex is located in the Yuzhnoportovy District at the intersection of Volgogradsky Prospekt and the Third Ring Road. The first phase includes seven thirty-story buildings, completed in the fourth quarter of 2022.

In total, the residential complex comprises 22 buildings and 1,106 apartments: 654 one-bedroom, 278 two-bedroom, and 174 three-bedroom units. The building facades feature different color schemes — dark, brown, orange-terracotta, gray, and white — creating visual diversity across the neighborhood. A two-level underground parking garage lies beneath the residential complex, with green lawns and pedestrian zones arranged between the buildings.

Transport Accessibility: How to Get to Metropoliya

Metropoliya is situated in a well-connected area of Moscow. The nearest metro stations are Dubrovka and Volgogradsky Prospekt, and the Third Ring Road and Moscow Central Circle are also nearby. Volgogradsky Prospekt is one of the thoroughfares that, after the closure of the Moskvich plant, completely transformed from an industrial zone into a modern residential area with business-class complexes.

For motorists, there is convenient access to the Third Ring Road and Ryazansky Prospekt. The road along the complex is actively used by local residents, and parking spaces on the territory and in the underground garage solve the problem of vehicle storage.

Neighboring Landmarks: Technopolis Moscow and Industrial Heritage

Across from Metropoliya, on the other side of Volgogradsky Prospekt, lies Technopolis Moscow — an innovative industrial cluster created on the former AZLK territory in the Pechatniki District. The idea for reorganization emerged in the early 2010s as part of Moscow's industrial modernization strategy, and in 2012 the city government decided to redevelop the territory.

Today, Technopolis hosts production facilities for 26 companies, including Korean LED manufacturer Powerful LED, Russian-French Crocus Nanoelectronics, and the Composite holding. Thus, the former automobile plant continues its industrial life, but in a new high-tech format.
