Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Trutnov — Online Webcam
Trutnov — Gateway to the Giant Mountains
Trutnov is located in the Hradec Králové Region of Czechia on the Úpa River at the foot of the Giant Mountains range. This town with a population of about 31.4 thousand inhabitants serves as a gateway to the highest mountains in Czechia. Trutnov was first mentioned around 1260, and under its current name since 1301, making it one of the historically significant settlements in the region.
The online camera is mounted on an elevated point and faces southwest, offering a view of the historic core of the town. The broadcast allows you to observe the architectural ensemble of the central square, the silhouette of the church, and the green slopes framing Trutnov from the south and west.
Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary — Architectural Dominant
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was originally a Gothic temple built in the first third of the 14th century. However, after a devastating fire in 1680, the Gothic building was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The church acquired its present appearance in 1756–1782, when a building in the Classicist style with elements of late Baroque was constructed according to the design of architect Leopold Niedecker.
The distinctive silhouette of the church is formed by its 64-meter towers, which are visible from a distance and serve as a landmark for tourists. The interior of the temple features a classic hall with massive pilasters, between which side altars are placed. The main altar was created in 1784 with a painting "Nativity of the Virgin Mary" by artist Jakub Quirin Jahn, with sculptures by Rauch and Knichel.
A unique feature of the interior is the 1910 organ with three thousand pipes, which gives the temple a special acoustic atmosphere. The church is located in the very heart of Trutnov's historic center on Krakonošovo Square, next to the former castle (now a museum), and is an active Catholic church open to visitors.
Krakonošovo Square — The Heart of the Town
The historic center of Trutnov is Krakonošovo Square (Krakonošovo náměstí) with arcades, the town hall, the Krakonoš Fountain (19th century), and the Plague Column. The arcade buildings with colorful facades create a unique appearance of the central space, where medieval planning is mixed with Baroque and Classicist architecture.
The square serves as a venue for town events, Christmas markets, and cultural occasions. The Krakonoš Fountain — depicting the mythical mountain spirit — has become a symbol of the town connected to the Giant Mountains. The Plague Column commemorates the tragic epidemics of the past endured by Trutnov's residents.
Geographical Location and Natural Surroundings
Trutnov is situated at the confluence of several tributaries of the Úpa River, in a valley surrounded by forested hills. From the southwest, the foothills of the Giant Mountains — the highest mountain range in Czechia — approach the town. This location determined the town's historical development as a trade and craft center at the crossroads between Czechia and Silesia.
The forests surrounding Trutnov consist mainly of spruce and beech, with mountain pine at higher elevations. In good weather, from the elevated point where the camera is installed, you can see the green slopes framing the town's buildings.
Architectural Ensemble of the Historic Center
Trutnov's urban development includes historic buildings with classical architecture and modern structures. The arcades of Krakonošovo Square are a characteristic element of Czech urban planning, protecting pedestrians from bad weather. The town hall and neighboring houses create a unified architectural ensemble, where each facade has its own story.
The bell tower of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dominates the town's skyline, serving as the visual center of the historic development. Its 64-meter towers are visible from various points in Trutnov and the surrounding area.
Transport Accessibility and Tourist Infrastructure
Trutnov is connected by rail to Prague and other cities in Czechia. Bus routes link the town to Giant Mountains resorts — Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, and others. For tourists, there are hotels, restaurants serving Czech cuisine, and museums, including the former castle located next to the church.
The pedestrian zone around Krakonošovo Square allows you to explore the main attractions in a few hours. Tourist routes into the mountains start from Trutnov, popular in summer for hiking and in winter for skiing.
