Webcam: D11 Bridge Construction in Trutnov (Czech Republic)
Elevated View: What the Online Camera Shows
The camera is installed in the EPO1 gallery — an information center of the construction site located directly in the work zone. This angle provides a panoramic view of the construction of one of the largest bridge structures on the D11 highway. In the center of the frame are tower cranes assembling the metal structures and concrete piers of the viaduct. In the foreground, you can see the roof of an industrial building with a dark roof and a parking lot with cars. In the background are the forested slopes of the Krkonoše foothills and the Úpa River valley.
History of the D11 Highway Construction
The D11 highway is one of the key transport arteries of the Czech Republic, connecting Prague with Hradec Králové and further with Poland. The first plans for this road appeared as early as 1939, but the project implementation stretched over decades. The section near Trutnov is one of the last unfinished fragments of the highway, which should complete the transport ring in the eastern direction.
Construction of the 21-kilometer section of D11 near Trutnov began in 2024. The contract value was 11.7 billion Czech crowns — this is the largest contract in the history of the Directorate of Roads and Motorways of the Czech Republic. The general contractor is the Polish company Budimex. Work is being carried out on the section between Královce and Bernartice, where the bridge crossings should connect the Czech road with the Polish expressway S3.
How the D11 Viaduct is Being Built in Trutnov
The viaduct is being built using the balanced cantilever method — the structure is extended symmetrically outward from the piers using special formwork trolleys (kluzák). This method allows spanning a deep valley without installing massive scaffolding from below. The bridge piers reach a height of about 60 meters, and the total length of the viaduct is hundreds of meters. The camera shows how concrete sections are gradually extended from the central piers toward the edges.
Metal span structures are assembled using tower cranes operating continuously. Power line poles providing energy supply for the construction are also visible on the site. In parallel with the bridge, work is underway on laying the road surface and constructing culverts.
What's Visible in the Background: Trutnov City and Surroundings
Trutnov is a city in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic with a population of about 31,000, located in the Úpa River valley at the foot of the Krkonoše mountain range. From the webcam, residential and industrial buildings of the city, green hills, and forested slopes are visible in the background. The Úpa River, a tributary of the Elbe, flows through the center of Trutnov and joins it downstream.
The Krkonoše is the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Krkonoše National Park covers an area of about 363 square kilometers and includes peaks up to 1,602 meters high (Sněžka). The camera shows the foothills of this range — characteristic forested slopes and green hills framing the Úpa River valley.
EPO1 Gallery: Observation Point
EPO1 is the name of the construction site and information center of the EPO Group company, which acts as the general contractor for the construction of the D11 section in Trutnov. The gallery is located directly in the construction work zone, providing a unique angle on the bridge construction. The camera is installed on an elevation, allowing it to cover the entire construction site and adjacent areas.
The EPO1 information center is open to visitors and serves as a platform for demonstrating the construction progress. Information stands with route plans, bridge crossing diagrams, and work schedules are installed here. The webcam allows monitoring the construction progress in real time from anywhere in the world.
Technical Features of the Bridge Crossing
The D11 bridge in Trutnov is one of the tallest bridges on the route. Its piers reach a height of about 60 meters, comparable to a 20-story building. This height is due to the need to cross the deep Úpa River valley and provide sufficient clearance for navigation and flood waters. The viaduct length is hundreds of meters — the exact figure depends on the number of spans and pier spacing.
The bridge structure is a reinforced concrete viaduct with metal span structures. The concrete piers are installed on pile foundations embedded in rocky soil. The span structures are assembled using the incremental launching method — sections are delivered to the piers and joined at height. The camera shows characteristic metal structures that are gradually extended from the piers toward the middle of the span.
Seasonality and Construction Site Working Hours
The D11 bridge construction is carried out year-round, regardless of weather conditions. In winter, work may be suspended during extremely low temperatures or heavy snowfall, but the main processes — assembly of metal structures and concreting of piers — continue. The camera shows how the site changes depending on the season: in summer, green vegetation predominates; in winter, snow cover on the Krkonoše slopes.
At night, the construction site is illuminated by floodlights, allowing work to be carried out in the dark. The camera shows how tower cranes are illuminated with signal lights, and the assembly zone is lit by powerful floodlights. This ensures work safety and allows monitoring construction quality at any time of day.
What the Camera Shows
The webcam in the EPO1 gallery shows the D11 bridge construction site in Trutnov in real time. In the center of the frame are tower cranes working on the viaduct construction. Visible are the concrete piers of the bridge, partially built spans with metal structures, and power line poles. In the foreground — the roof of an industrial building with a dark roof, a parking lot with cars, and solar panels on the roof of a neighboring building. In the background — residential and industrial buildings of Trutnov, green hills, and forested slopes of the Krkonoše foothills. The sky is cloudy with clearings — typical weather for this region of the Czech Republic.
