The square's name changed several times, reflecting the era. Originally it was Novo-Sobornaya Square, then it was renamed Revolution Square. In 1997, the historical name was restored, but the people stuck with "Yuzhnaya" — short, clear, and geographically accurate.

Interestingly, the toponym "Yuzhnaya" gave its name to an entire urban subdistrict — the area from the junction of Instrumentalny Lane and Belinskaya Street. Thus the square became the center of attraction for a whole district.

Tram Loop Since 1966

In 1966, Yuzhnaya Square was connected to Tomsk-1 railway station and Lagerny Garden by tram service. Since then, it has remained one of the city's key transport interchanges.

The authorities presented a Tomsk development plan through 2036, in which Yuzhnaya Square holds a special place. The construction of the third bridge across the Tom River should significantly relieve traffic flow and connect the southern districts with the left-bank part of the city.

Road repairs on the square were planned to be completed in 2022, and heating main repairs temporarily changed bus traffic patterns — such news regularly appears in local media.

Outdoor Holidays and Festivals

Yuzhnaya Square is not just about transport — it's also a venue for city celebrations. Street art festivals, concerts, and flash mobs are held here. In June, during the City Day celebrations (June 6–8), the square transforms into a ceremonial venue with flower-laying ceremonies and festive concerts.
