Lager Garden — Panorama of the Tom River from Vereshchagin Street in Tomsk
A panoramic view of the wide Tom River from the high right bank opens from the territory of Lager Garden in the Kirovsky District of Tomsk. The camera is installed at a high point, from which a large bend of the water, dense green vegetation, and a path along the shoreline are visible. On the opposite bank, fields, forest masses, and individual buildings can be seen, and in the distance — industrial chimneys and technical structures. The location is known for being the summer base of the 39th Tomsk Infantry Regiment, and the Tom River itself becomes a place for mass entertainment in spring.
History of Lager Garden: From Military Camps to City Park
Lager Garden is a city park in the Kirovsky District of Tomsk, located on the high right bank of the Tom River in a landslide zone. Its area is about 40 hectares, with dimensions of approximately 1300×300 meters. The garden's name originated from the summer camps of the 39th Tomsk Infantry Regiment (which changed its official name several times throughout its history) being stationed here in the 18th–19th centuries. The choice of location for the camp was discussed by the city council; it was decided to allocate land closer to the city so that during the summer season of mass fires, soldiers could be quickly called upon to extinguish them. The site became the southern side of present-day Nakhimov Street (from Vereshchagin Street to Lager Garden), where about a dozen and a half barracks, a summer battalion church, 5 company kitchens, an officers' club, a rotunda for dancing, and a carousel for children were built.
39th Tomsk Infantry Regiment: Soldier Life in the 19th Century
The garden camp was located on the southern side of present-day Nakhimov Street, between Vereshchagin Street and the garden itself. Historians note that in the 19th century, a complex of barracks was located here — dozens of small barracks-style houses built outside the city on the high and steep bank of the Tom River. The park became a place where soldiers of the regiment, as well as state institutions, were stationed. Since 1910, Lager Garden came under the jurisdiction of city self-government bodies, the territory was expanded and became a public park.
Vereshchagin Street: From Trade Street to the Name of a Famous Military Figure
Vereshchagin Street is a street in the Kirovsky District of Tomsk, stretching from north to south from Nechevsky Lane to the bank of the Tom River, crossing Herzen, Kartashov, Kirov Avenue, Usov, Pirogov, Uchebnaya, and Nakhimov streets. The total length is 2.3 km. Initially, the street was called Trade Street (since 1867), when trading rows ran along it and it was inhabited mainly by merchants. It was renamed on April 16, 1951, in honor of Academician Nikolai Vasilyevich Vereshchagin, the founder of the Siberian pharmacologists school. In fact, Vereshchagin Street adjoins Lager Garden — the street ends at the bank of the Tom River in the area where the park territory directly begins. On the southern side of Nakhimov Street, between Vereshchagin Street and Lager Garden, the garden territory is located. The public transport stops "Vereshchagina" and "Lager Garden" are nearby.
Observation Deck and River Panorama
From the main alley of Lager Garden, leading to the Great Patriotic War Memorial, there is an observation deck offering a wide river panorama of the Tom River. The "Eternal Flame" monument is also visible. The park has become a place where townspeople gather in spring to watch the ice drift on the river. This is one of the popular spots for photo sessions and walks. The camera installed in the garden shows a view of the river in real time, allowing users to monitor the weather, water level, and ice behavior on the river.
What Makes the Spring Broadcast on the Tom River Interesting
In summer, the Tom is calm, but in summer the water becomes turbulent. On the camera screen, you can see the movement of boats and pleasure boats. The park provides ample space for active recreation. The camera shows not only the river but also the path along the shoreline, street lamps, and trees. The live broadcast from Lager Garden allows you to follow the street life of the city, including how townspeople take walks, go for runs, or simply relax on terraces facing the river.
