Monument to Lenin: the history of three sculptures

The fate of the monument to Lenin on the square is dramatic. The first monument to Lenin in Velikiye Luki was installed and solemnly opened on November 7, 1928 on the site of the former chapel. The bronze sculpture was made in the Main Railway Workshops, the author is the famous sculptor M. G. Manizer. This monument was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. In the 1930s, another monument to Lenin appeared in the square, which also did not survive the occupation. But the most amazing story is connected with the fate of one of the monuments — during the occupation, the Germans took the monument to Lenin to Germany for melting, but anti-fascist workers and Soviet prisoners of war in the city of Eisleben saved the statue by burying it in the ground and setting up a scrap metal dump over it. The modern monument to Lenin on the square was installed in 1957 and solemnly opened on April 22, 1957 — on Vladimir Ilyich's birthday.

Stela "City of Military Glory"

In 2010, the center of the square was adorned with a new dominant — the stela "City of Military Glory", installed in the center of the square in 2010 in honor of the city being awarded the honorary title. The grand opening took place on July 17, 2010. Velikiye Luki received this title for the courage and heroism shown by residents during the Great Patriotic War.
