Dyakonova Street and Lenin Avenue in Velikiye Luki — Online Webcam
Velikiye Luki — a city on the Lovat River
Velikiye Luki stands on the banks of the Lovat River, 274 kilometers south of Pskov. The city has been known since 1166 — its first chronicle mention — and holds the title of City of Military Glory, awarded in 2011. It is a major railway junction and the center of Pskov Oblast with a population of about 92,000 people.
Dyakonova Street is one of the city's central thoroughfares, crossing Lenin Avenue in the very heart of Velikiye Luki. The live webcam is installed right at this intersection and shows a roundabout with circular traffic.
Dyakonova Street — named after a hero
The street was named in 1972 in honor of Alexander Alexandrovich Dyakonov — Hero of the Soviet Union and honorary citizen of Velikiye Luki. He commanded troops in the defensive battles for the city in 1941 and participated in the Velikiye Luki offensive operation from November 1942 to January 1943.
Previously, the street was called Kavaleriyskaya and Onezhskaya. It runs from Engels Street near the city market northeast to Druzhby Street, crossing Lenin Avenue, Gagarin Avenue, Polyarnaya Street, and other streets. Part of the street lies on the territory of the former Koshachya Sloboda and the settlement of Kartsevo.
Lenin Avenue — the central artery
Lenin Avenue is the main avenue of Velikiye Luki, part of the A122 federal highway. It crosses the city from west to east and leads to the central road bridge over the Lovat River. Around Lenin Square stand stately Stalin-era buildings, the city administration building, and the Yubileynaya Hotel.
From Lenin Avenue, a walking trail along the 12th-century earth rampart leads to the Obelisk of Glory on the Neplyuev Bastion of the Velikiye Luki Fortress. The fortress's earth ramparts have settled to a height of 12–16 meters but still impress with their scale.
Kalinin Square — the heart of the intersection
At the intersection of Dyakonova Street and Lenin Avenue lies Kalinin Square — one of the city's central squares. Here stand:
• Obelisk of Glory (1960, architect Mart Port) — built by decree of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR as a symbol of military brotherhood
• "City of Military Glory" stele
• Commemorative sign honoring the city's first chronicle mention in 1166
• Monument to V.I. Lenin
• Memorial plaque Earth Rampart from the 12th century
• Memorial with the names of fallen soldiers
Nearby, in the area of Kolkhoznaya and Dyakonova streets on the northeastern outskirts, there is a military burial site — the city's military cemetery.
Roundabout — modern reconstruction
The intersection of Dyakonova Street and Lenin Avenue was reconstructed with a roundabout. This is already the fourth roundabout in Velikiye Luki. In the center of the circle is a grassy island; cars, minibuses, and trucks move around the ring.
The camera is mounted at an elevated position and covers not only the intersection itself but also adjacent streets, sidewalks, road markings, and lampposts. Trees are visible on the right side of the frame, adding liveliness to the broadcast.
Architecture around the intersection
In the background of the camera are multi-story Soviet-era residential buildings 5–6 stories high. One building stands out with a white facade and pink lower section — a characteristic architectural feature of Velikiye Luki from the second half of the 20th century. Road signs, sidewalks, and areas adjacent to the intersection are visible.
Velikiye Luki is a city of contrasts: alongside typical Soviet-era buildings stand preserved pre-revolutionary structures, and on the Lovat embankment you can see the Ascension Velikolutsky Convent with its domes.
Velikiye Luki — City of Military Glory
Velikiye Luki is one of the few Russian cities to receive the title of "City of Military Glory". This title was awarded by decree of the President of the Russian Federation in 2011 for the courage, resilience, and mass heroism shown by the city's defenders in the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Motherland.
In 1941, the city was occupied by Nazi German forces and liberated in January 1943 during the Velikiye Luki operation. The memorials at Kalinin Square and the Obelisk of Glory on the Neplyuev Bastion serve as reminders of those events.
