Nikolskaya Street got its name from the Church of St. Nicholas, which stood here as early as the 19th century.

In 1920, the Velikiye Luki Executive Committee decided to rename it — Nikolskaya Street became Lenin Avenue. It was a time when old names gave way to new, revolutionary ones. However, the street itself retained its layout and many buildings built back in the merchant era.
