Ala-Too Square — the heart of the capital

Ala-Too Square is the main public space of Bishkek, a venue for state holidays, military parades, and public festivities. The square received its current location in 1979 under the city planning project of Frunze — the former name of Bishkek. The name "Ala-Too" (or "alatau") translates as "motley mountains" — mountains with altitudinal zonation. This is symbolic, as the city lies at the foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too — a range of the Central Tien Shan.

From the October Revolution to the present day

The history of the square dates back to the Soviet period. In the late 1920s, the square was laid out and originally named in honor of the October Revolution. Over its nearly century-long history, it has repeatedly changed its appearance, remaining the main public space of the capital. In different years, monuments were erected here, fountains were installed, and green zones were formed. Each era left its mark on the architectural ensemble of the central square.

Monument to Manas the Magnificent — symbol of the epic

One of the key landmarks of the square is the monument to the hero of the Kyrgyz epic, Manas the Magnificent. In 2011, a monument to Manas was installed on the square, and in 2025 it was replaced by a 33-meter monument created by sculptor Tamila Mamatova. The new monument is one of the largest in Central Asia and embodies the image of the legendary hero who united the Kyrgyz people. At the base of the flagpole, the Honor Guard stands watch, adding solemnity to the space.

Architectural ensemble of the square

A unique architectural environment has formed around the perimeter of Ala-Too Square. Located here are the State Historical Museum, the Peoples' Friendship monument, Oak Park with an open-air sculpture museum, the Church of St. Nicholas — the oldest building in the city, and the White House — the seat of the government of Kyrgyzstan. Each of these buildings has its own history and holds architectural value, shaping the distinctive appearance of the central square.

Southern Bishkek — parks and landmarks

The panorama of Bishkek covers not only the center but also the southern districts of the capital. Here lies Victory Park named after Dair Asanov, founded in 1981 and covering 35 hectares. The park is named after a Hero of the Great Patriotic War, artilleryman Dair Asanov. Nearby is the park named after Baytik Kanayev — a 19th-century Kyrgyz political figure and folk hero-batyr. In 2025, the Sky Park Baytik amusement park opened here, covering 4.5 hectares with 17 rides, including a Drop Tower and a Pirate Ship.

"Eurasia" Park — a gift from Russia to Kyrgyzstan

On August 30, 2025, a free amusement park "Eurasia" opened in Bishkek, covering 10 hectares. It is one of the largest free parks in Eurasia, featuring 34-meter slides and walking areas. The park has become a symbol of friendship between Russia and Kyrgyzstan and quickly turned into a popular recreation spot for city residents. Its opening coincided with the completion of a large-scale reconstruction of the capital's central squares.

2025 reconstruction — a new life for the square

In 2025, the reconstruction of Ala-Too Square was completed, with a ceremonial opening attended by Bishkek Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev. The updated space received modern paving, new green zones, improved lighting, and renovated fountains. The reconstruction preserved the historical appearance of the square while making it more comfortable for city residents and guests. The panorama of Bishkek now showcases the updated center, blending tradition and modernity.
