Suusamyr Valley: Land of High Mountains and Medicinal Herbs

The Suusamyr Valley is an intermontane basin stretching about 100 km from west to east. To the north, it is bounded by the Talas and Kyrgyz ranges, and to the south by the Susamyrtau and Jumgaltau ranges with peaks reaching 4500 m. This area is famous for its natural riches: over 300 species of medicinal herbs grow here, and the local climate and kumis are used to treat nervous system and gastrointestinal tract diseases.

Bishkek–Osh Highway: The Main Artery of Kyrgyzstan

The gas station in Suusamyr is an important stop for travelers, as the Bishkek–Osh highway runs through the valley, stretching 678 km. This is the country's main road artery connecting the north and south. Traffic intensity here has grown from 404 vehicles per day in 1996 to 4,000 at present. You can reach the valley by crossing the Too-Ashuu pass (highest point 3586 m) through a 3 km tunnel at an altitude of 3200 m. The Suusamyr Valley is located 130 km from Bishkek.

Climate and Weather Conditions at 2400 Meters Above Sea Level

The bottom of the Suusamyr Valley sits at an altitude of about 2300–2400 meters above sea level, and the Suusamyr village weather station is located at an altitude of 2092 m. The climate here is sharply continental. In winter, temperatures can drop to -40…-45°C, with an absolute minimum of -49°C. The average January temperature is -20…-21°C. In summer, the thermometer can rise to +30°C, but the average July temperature is only about +13…+14°C.

Infrastructure and Tourism in the Valley

Despite the harsh climate, the region attracts tourists. Hotels are available for visitors, including "Kumisolchebnitsa Turan", "Kumisolchebnitsa Baytur", "Hotel Altai", and a yurt camp is set up in summer. Cultural landmarks of the valley include the mazar of Kojomkul — the tomb of a legendary Kyrgyz hero, as well as sites where the Manas epic is performed by akyns. The Suusamyr River, popular for fishing, flows nearby.

History of Development: From Secret Tunnels to Kumis Sanatoriums

In Soviet times, Suusamyr was the most densely populated high-mountain pasture in the USSR. Construction of the Bishkek–Osh road began even before the Great Patriotic War, but due to the war, it was completed only 24 years later. Uranium transportation and a classified project became part of the construction history. The Bishkek–Naryn–Torugart highway, 539 km long, took 13 years to build, and most of the road runs through picturesque mountain gorges and high-mountain plateaus, where several climate zones change within a 12-hour drive. In winter, a ski resort operates here, and in summer, paragliding (thanks to the absence of trees) and picking steppe white mushrooms are popular.
