Vela Square in Krk — Live Webcam Online in Croatia
History of Vela Square — From the Romans to the Present Day
Vela Square (Vela placa) is the heart of old Krk, a place where eras intertwine. This live webcam shows a space that remembers Roman patricians, Venetian doges, and medieval merchants. The first written mention of the square dates back to 1263, but archaeological finds suggest this place was the center of urban life long before that. Beneath the stone slabs that tourists walk on today lie the remains of ancient city walls from the 4th–3rd centuries BC — traces of Illyrian settlers and Roman colonists.
In the Middle Ages, the town hall and court were located here, and during the Renaissance the square became a bustling trading center. The inscription Splendidissima civitatis Curictarum — "The Brilliant City of Krk" — is the first written evidence of the city's existence, discovered on an ancient 4th-century tombstone. Today, this phrase has become the unofficial motto of Krk, and Vela Square remains its symbolic center.
Archaeological Treasures Beneath Your Feet
Krk is a city where every stone holds history, and Vela Square is no exception. The archaeological site beneath the square is a multi-layered monument: from Illyrian fortifications to Roman baths and medieval structures. Excavations have uncovered fragments of city gates that were later rebuilt into the town hall — a unique example of architectural adaptation.
Of particular interest is the Temple of Venus — the only one on the eastern Adriatic coast. Today, its ruins can be seen inside the Memento shop, right on the square. This is a rare case where an ancient shrine is integrated into the modern urban environment, creating a striking contrast of eras. Nearby stands the early Christian cathedral, built on the ruins of Roman baths — another example of historical layering.
Architectural Gems of the Square
The view of Vela Square through the live webcam focuses on two dominant elements. The six-sided well (šestostrani bunar) from the 16th century is adorned with the coat of arms of the Frankopan family — a powerful Croatian aristocratic dynasty that ruled Krk for centuries. Its hexagonal shape is unusual for Dalmatian wells and points to Venetian influence.
The square Torrion tower from the 15th century is another architectural centerpiece of the square. Once part of the city's fortifications, it now serves as an exhibition space. The square measures about 45 meters wide, making it compact yet highly expressive. At its center stands an ornate fountain, and above the square flies a banner featuring the city's heraldic animal — the owl.
Legends and Myths of Old Krk
Krk is a city with a rich mythological tradition known as Vêyske Povêde ("Vay Tales"). About ten epic legends span from prehistoric times through antiquity to the Middle Ages. Among the most famous are stories of the golden sheep, passed down from generation to generation, and the legend of the fairy's washbasin — the Vela rika stream on the island of Krk, the largest watercourse on the Croatian islands.
These stories are more than just folklore — they reflect the centuries-old identity of the island of Krk, which is the largest island in the Adriatic Sea with an area of about 409 sq. km (along with the island of Cres). Locals still tell of strange phenomena and mystical events connected to ancient stones and underground passages that, according to legend, run through the old town.
Open-Air Festivals and Concerts
Vela Square is not only an open-air museum but also an active cultural space. In summer, concerts and festivals take place here, turning medieval walls into backdrops for modern performances. The Krk Town Band gives free concerts on July 1, 14, and 29 at 21:00, Duo Beep performs on July 20, and on July 30 you can hear the klapa Rašketa — a traditional Dalmatian vocal ensemble.
On August 15, the square hosts the Vela Gospa festival featuring Vesna Pisarović and the band Feedback. In June (19–21), the Krk Music Fest takes place, featuring concerts by 4 Tenors, U2 tribute band Velvet Dress, and Golden Pop Rock Show. Gastronomic festivals and traditional celebrations add to Vela Square's status as the main stage of Krk town.
What to See Near Vela Square
A walk from Vela Square reveals the key attractions of Krk. The Cathedral is one of the oldest on the Adriatic, its bell tower visible from anywhere in the old town. Frankopan Castle, towering over the harbor, preserves the memory of the rulers whose coat of arms adorns the well on the square. Café Volsonis, located right on the square, is surrounded by valuable archaeological artifacts and ancient city walls from the 4th century AD — here you can enjoy coffee sitting among the ruins of antiquity.
The island of Krk offers other routes as well: from the beaches in Punat to the vineyards around Malinska, from pine forests to cliffs with panoramic views. But Vela Square remains the starting point — the place where your acquaintance with the city begins and where you'll want to return again and again.
