History of Rijnhaven Harbor — from winter anchorage to industrial hub

Rijnhaven Harbor appeared on the map of the Netherlands for a reason. It was dug between 1887 and 1895 under the direction of Gerrit de Jongh, director of municipal works in Rotterdam. Initially, this location was created for vessels that could not continue navigation when the Rhine froze in winter. The municipality of Rotterdam soon decided to deepen the waterway after its creation to accommodate larger vessels, which marked the beginning of its transformation from a winter anchorage into an industrial harbor. Today it is a former industrial zone undergoing large-scale urban transformation into a new residential district between Kop van Zuid and Katendrecht.
