Hofplein Square Rotterdam — Live Webcam Online
History of Hofplein Square: From Transport Hub to Green Center
Hofplein Square is not just a dot on the map of Rotterdam, but a crucial transport hub and public space in the very heart of the city. If you want to see the pulse of this Dutch metropolis, our live webcam opens up a view of this dynamic area. Located at the intersection of key thoroughfares Weena, Schiekade and Coolsingel, the square connects different parts of Rotterdam.
Before World War II, this place was an incredibly complex intersection. Fourteen streets of varying widths, three waterways and two intersecting railway lines converged here. In 1909, the Rotterdam Hofplein railway station appeared on the northeast corner, operating until 2010. After the war, the square had to be reimagined, and today we see the result of this large-scale redevelopment.
The Octagonal Hofpleinfontein Fountain: Bronze Animals and Water Jets
The main decoration of the square is the Hofpleinfontein fountain. Its octagonal basin has a diameter of 31 meters. The project was designed by municipal architect J.R.A. Koops. The fountain itself was a gift to the city from the shipping company Van Ommeren in 1939, for its 100th anniversary, with a budget of 200,000 guilders. However, the official opening took place later — in 1955, when thousands of Rotterdam residents gathered to see eight powerful water jets shooting up in the center of the basin. The bronze sculptures adorning the fountain were created by artist Cor van Kralingen. They depict eight aquatic and terrestrial animals: a hippopotamus, a crocodile with a duck, a squirrel and others.
Architectural Ensemble: Hofpoort, Hofplein 19 and the Hofbogen Viaduct
Iconic buildings surround the fountain. For instance, the Hofpoort building was fully renovated in 2015-2016. It was transformed from vacant offices into a multifunctional complex with over 19,000 m² of leasable space. Also notable on the square are Hofplein 19 and the old Hofbogen railway viaduct, which has today been turned into an unusual park. All of this creates a unique contrast between historical heritage and modern urban design.
2024–2028 Reconstruction: What's Changing at the Square
The square is undergoing a new phase of transformation. On April 14, 2024, large-scale works began with the goal of turning Hofplein into a green urban square by 2028. The project aims to improve quality of life, climate and mobility. The live camera allows you to observe how the familiar landscape is changing: construction work around the fountain marks the beginning of a major redevelopment.
Transport Accessibility and Rotterdam Surroundings
Rotterdam is famous for its developed infrastructure, and Hofplein is an important part of it. A tram line runs nearby, and pedestrian zones conveniently connect the square to other landmarks such as the Erasmus Bridge and the famous Cube Houses. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest in Europe, is also relatively close, underscoring the scale of the city.
Climate and Weather at Hofplein Square
The Netherlands is known for its maritime climate. The weather at Hofplein Square reflects the general trends: frequent rains, moderate temperatures and strong winds. In summer, the green grass around the fountain is pleasing to the eye, and in winter the square can be covered in snow, creating a completely different, fairy-tale atmosphere. Our live webcam shows the current weather without having to leave your home.
