History of Station and Terminal Construction
The railway line from Surgut to Nizhnevartovsk began construction in 1973 by specialists of construction and assembly train No. 227 of the Tyumenstroyput management. Construction took place in harsh climatic conditions and swampy terrain — challenges typical of Western Siberia, requiring special technologies for embankment reinforcement.
Nizhnevartovsk-1 Station was officially established on January 16, 1980 simultaneously with the commissioning of the railway branch from Surgut to Nizhnevartovsk. On January 20, 1980, the first passenger train arrived, launching regular service for residents of the oil capital of Yugra.
The first station chief, Vladimir Petrovich Kirilenko, led the facility for 28 years. Under his leadership in 2002, on the occasion of Nizhnevartovsk's 30th anniversary, a new station building was constructed, which later became a Guinness World Record holder.
Record-Breaking Terminal Station
The Nizhnevartovsk Railway Station is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest passenger terminal at a terminus station in the world. This status gives the facility special significance not only as a transport hub but also as an architectural landmark of the KhMAD.
The total area of the station building is 7,700 square meters. The architectural design with a curved roof and spacious halls is calculated to serve a large number of passengers simultaneously — this is critical for a terminus station where all arriving trains create peak loads inside the station building.

The Nizhnevartovsk-1 terminal handles significant passenger traffic. Over 400,000 passengers depart from the terminal annually. These include routes to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Volgograd, Samara, Chelyabinsk, and other cities across Russia.
The freight component of the station is equally important for the regional economy. Nearly 1.5 million tons of cargo are shipped from the station annually.
