Where the Blace Border Crossing Is Located

The Blace border crossing is located in the south of North Macedonia, in close proximity to the administrative boundary with Kosovo. It is a key transport hub on the route between Skopje and Pristina — two capitals separated by a distance of about 85–90 kilometers. History of the Joint Border Crossing Creation

The joint border crossing point "Blace – Han i Elezit" was officially opened in April 2025. The project was implemented based on the "one-stop" principle, where officials from both sides work together at a single facility. This significantly simplified the border crossing procedure for passengers and drivers, eliminating the need to pass through double control at separate posts.

Before the launch of the joint crossing, travelers had to wait quite a long time for their turn, undergoing checks sequentially on the Macedonian side and then on the Kosovar side. The new system has reduced waiting times and increased the transparency of the process.

The A1 Motorway — The Main Artery to the Border

The approach to the Blace border crossing from Skopje is via the A1 motorway — one of the country's key highways. This road is part of the European route E75 and stretches 173 kilometers from north to south of North Macedonia. The motorway is a four-lane toll road with controlled access.

Construction of the Skopje – Blace motorway section has been actively underway in recent years. It was planned that the second phase of construction would begin in mid-2021. In parallel, on the Macedonian side, Kosovar authorities worked on completing the motorway from Pristina to the border to improve transport links between the two countries.

Traffic Organization at the Border Crossing

At the Han i Elezit → Blace crossing point, separate lanes for passenger cars, buses, and trucks have been organized. This separation of traffic flows allows for more efficient distribution of vehicles and reduces waiting times for passenger transport.

The checkpoint infrastructure includes border and customs control buildings, metal fences, barriers, and road markings with directional arrows. Vehicles line up in several rows, creating a characteristic picture of an active border crossing. To the right of the traffic lanes are the border infrastructure buildings, and to the left are road barriers and concrete barriers.

Transit Significance of the Corridor

The Kosovo — North Macedonia corridor is considered one of the busiest in the Western Balkans. It connects the two capitals — Skopje and Pristina — and provides important transport links between the central part of the peninsula and its southern regions.

The distance from Skopje to the border is about 50 kilometers, and from the border crossing to Pristina — another 40 kilometers. The total route of approximately 90 kilometers is usually covered in one and a half to two hours, depending on the congestion at the border crossing.
