Ameland Ferry Terminal in Nes — Online Webcam Stream
Ameland Ferry Crossing — Gateway to the Island
The camera is installed at the terminal in the village of Nes — the main settlement in the eastern part of Ameland island. This is the island's only regular passenger and vehicle connection to the mainland. Ferries arrive and depart every hour, linking Nes with the port of Holwerd in the province of Friesland. The crossing over the Wadden Sea is one of the key routes in the system of 17 ports in this shallow region of the North Sea.
The route is operated by Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten — a company that has been running ferry services since 1920, when it took over the state ferry service. Over the century, the route has evolved from a basic transport necessity into a modern crossing with high-speed vessels.
Transport Significance for the Island
The Ameland ferry crossing carries over 1.3 million passengers annually. It is the island's main supply channel and the primary route for tourists visiting Ameland during the summer season. Ferries take on board cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians — no reservation is required, tickets are purchased at the terminal ticket office.
Since 2018, a fast ferry has been operating on the route, reducing travel time. And in February 2025, Wagenborg signed a contract with Next Generation Shipyards to build a new "Wadden Ferry" — a multi-million investment in developing the connection between the island and the mainland.
History of the Ferry Service
The Holwerd — Nes ferry line has existed since 1920, when Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten took over the state ferry service. The Nes terminal is located on the southern side of the island in the harbor of the same name, next to the marina and the KNRM rescue station. Over the century, the route has evolved from a simple crossing to a modern system with hourly departures and high-speed vessels.
Arriva bus line 166 from Leeuwarden is synchronized with the fast ferry schedule, providing a seamless "train — bus — ferry" chain for passengers from the mainland.
Terminal Infrastructure and Parking
On the mainland side in Holwerd, two parking lots operate. Parking P1 is located directly at the terminal and is open 7 days a week — from half an hour before the first ferry arrival from Ameland until 15 minutes after the last departure. When P1 is full, drivers are directed to parking P2, located approximately 2.5 km from the terminal. A Wagenborg Passenger Services shuttle runs between P2 and the terminal.
At the Nes terminal itself, payment terminals are installed next to the coffee machine, along with a ticket office and waiting area. Nearby are the marina, the KNRM rescue station, and the WestCord Hotel Noordsee Ameland Nes.
The Wadden Sea — Crossing Context
The ferry crosses the Wadden Sea — a shallow region of the North Sea included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a unique ecosystem with tides that expose vast sandbanks. The crossing from Holwerd to Nes is one of the 17 ports of the Wadden Sea, and the route passes through protected areas inhabited by seals and thousands of migratory birds.
Ameland is one of the five inhabited islands in the West Frisian chain. The ferry to Nes is the only regular passenger connection to the mainland, making this terminal a critical node in the region's transport infrastructure.
Bicycle Infrastructure at the Terminal
In the camera image, a road with a bicycle lane is clearly visible — Ameland is one of the cycling centers of the Netherlands. The island is crisscrossed by a network of cycling routes, and the ferry crossing is adapted for bicycle transport. Pedestrians and cyclists follow dedicated paths to the dock where ferry boarding takes place.
The promenade and pier are equipped for safe passenger passage. On the terminal grounds, mooring bollards, metal containers, fences, and lamp posts are visible — standard equipment for a Wadden Sea ferry terminal.
What the Camera Shows
The webcam broadcasts the Ameland ferry terminal in the village of Nes in real time. In the image — a road with a bicycle lane where cyclists are moving, on the right — the promenade and pier with pedestrians approaching the ferry. A white ferry with red elements is docked at the pier. In the background — the sea waters of the Wadden Sea. Port facilities are visible: mooring bollards, metal containers, fences, lamp posts, and the ticket office. The area is lively — people are walking, cycling, preparing to board the ferry.
