Krasnoyarsk — the Capital of Siberia on the Banks of the Yenisei

Krasnoyarsk stretches across the deep valley of the Yenisei at the junction of the West Siberian Plain, the Central Siberian Plateau, and the Sayan Mountains. It is one of the oldest cities in Siberia, founded on August 6 (16), 1628 by a detachment of Cossacks led by Andrey Anufrievich Dubensky. Originally the settlement was called Krasny Yar — "beautiful shore," reflecting its picturesque location at the confluence of the Kacha River and the Yenisei.

Today Krasnoyarsk is the largest economic, educational, and cultural center of Eastern Siberia with a population of 1,211,756 people (2025). It is the sixth most populous city in Russia and the easternmost million-plus city in the country. The Krasnoyarsk agglomeration is home to over one and a half million residents, making it the region's most important transport and logistics hub.

The Yenisei River flowing through the city is the most full-flowing river in Russia with an annual discharge of 624.41 km³. Its length is 3,487 km, and the catchment area covers 2,580,000 km². The Yenisei divides the territory of Russia roughly in half and forms a natural boundary between Western and Eastern Siberia.

The Chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa — the Symbol of the City

Atop Karaulnaya Mountain beyond the Kacha River rises the main symbol of Krasnoyarsk — the Chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. This small religious structure with expressive large details stylized in Old Russian forms is visible from virtually any point in the city.

The stone chapel was built in 1852–1855 at the expense of gold miner Pyotr Ivanovich Kuznetsov, designed by architects Yakov Alfeyev and Yakov Nabalov. Previously, a wooden chapel stood on this site, built in 1805 by merchant Novikov in memory of his rescue from a whirlpool at a river rapid.

Since 1980, the chapel has held the status of a local architectural monument. In 1994, religious services were resumed, and in 1996 it was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. The image of the chapel adorns the Russian ten-ruble banknote of the 1997 series — its silhouette can be seen on the reverse side of the bill along with the Kommunalny Bridge and the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Station.

The artist Vasily Surikov often worked on his sketches at the chapel grounds, and in August 1887 Alexander Popov observed a solar eclipse here. In memory of this event, a granite memorial plaque was installed on the eastern facade in 1977.

Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Station and the Unique Ship Lift

35 kilometers southwest of Krasnoyarsk, near the town of Divnogorsk, lies the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Station — the second most powerful hydroelectric plant in Russia. Its gravity concrete dam is 1,065 meters long and 124 meters high, blocking the Yenisei channel and forming a reservoir with an area of 2,000 km², which locals call the Krasnoyarsk Sea.

The uniqueness of the station lies in Russia's only ship lift — a structure replacing traditional locks. The platform-crane moves along two separate trestles 9 meters wide, connected by a gear mechanism. Powered by electric traction, it descends below water level, takes in a vessel, lifts it to a height of over 100 meters, transitions to a turntable, and lowers it onto another track.

Construction of the ship lift began in 1963 and lasted nearly ten years. It underwent trial operation in 1976 and was officially commissioned in 1982. The total length of the structure is 1,510 meters, and the platform speed is about 1 m/s (20 m/min). The ship lift can transport vessels up to 78 meters long, 15 meters wide, and with a draft of 1.9 meters, with a carrying capacity of up to 1,500 tons.

The image of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Station is featured on the front side of the 10-ruble banknote, making it one of the most recognizable industrial landmarks in the country.

Krasnoyarsk Stolby — the Natural Pride of the Region

To the southwest, the "Krasnoyarsk Stolby" National Park adjoins Krasnoyarsk — a protected natural area covering 48,066 hectares. The park was established in 1925 as a nature reserve to protect syenite outliers and was transformed into a national park in 2019.

The main treasure of Stolby is 99 rock pillars — massive syenite columns ranging from 60 to 600 meters in height, formed by the weathering of volcanic deposits. The gray-pink syenite stone is similar to granite; its name derives from the Egyptian village of Syena (Aswan) — the place where the rock was discovered.

Among the most famous rocks are Ded (Grandfather), Vnuk (Grandson), Babka (Grandmother), Vnuchka (Granddaughter), Pyorya (Feathers), Lvinye Vorota (Lion's Gate), and Pervy Stolb (First Pillar). On the eastern wall of the highest Second Stolb (750 m above sea level), the word "Svoboda" (Freedom) is visible — the inscription was made by a Minusinsk resident named Denisyuk and two of his companions in 1899. The climbing route nearby is also called "Svoboda."

The park's flora comprises 1,882 plant species, including Nashchokin's linden — a relict endemic species found only in the "Stolby" nature reserve. This tree from prehistoric times has survived only here and has been listed in the Red Book of Krasnoyarsk Krai since 2005.

The fauna is represented by 296 animal species, including brown bear, wolf, lynx, and wolverine. Rare birds such as the peregrine falcon and eagle owl inhabit the park. Over 200,000 tourists visit the recreational zone annually, and the site is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Sports Capital: 2019 Winter Universiade

Krasnoyarsk entered the history of world sports as the host city of the XXIX Winter Universiade 2019. This was the first Winter Universiade held in Russia and the second most significant multi-sport event in the world after the Olympic Games.

The competitions took place from March 2 to 12, 2019, in 11 sports: biathlon, alpine skiing, curling, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ski orienteering, figure skating, freestyle, ice hockey, bandy, and short track. The opening ceremony was broadcast in 60 countries worldwide, and the final ice hockey match between Russia and Slovakia ended with a 2:1 victory for the hosts.

For the Universiade, sports facilities were built and renovated in Krasnoyarsk, including the "Platinum Arena," where the closing ceremony was held. The event left behind a developed sports infrastructure and strengthened the city's reputation as the sports capital of Siberia.

Dostoevsky and Krasnoyarsk: Pages of History

Krasnoyarsk is connected with the name of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky — the great Russian writer passed through the city during his Siberian exile. In 1849, Dostoevsky was arrested in connection with the "Petrashevsky case" and sentenced to death, which at the last moment was commuted to hard labor.

The penal caravan transporting him to the Omsk fortress passed through Krasnoyarsk, where the writer spent several days. After his release from prison in February 1854, he was sent as a private to the 7th Siberian Line Battalion in Semipalatinsk. In memory of Dostoevsky's stay in the city, a street was named after him and a commemorative plaque was installed.

The Siberian exile became a turning point in Dostoevsky's life and work — from a "seeker of truth in man" he became a deeply religious person, which was reflected in his subsequent works.

Climate and Nature of Krasnoyarsk

The climate of Krasnoyarsk is sharply continental, with significant temperature differences between winter and summer. However, the influence of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir and the non-freezing section of the Yenisei below the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Station dam mitigates temperature fluctuations within the city.

The city is located in a unique place — at the junction of several geographical zones. To the west lies the West Siberian Plain, to the east — the Central Siberian Plateau, and to the south — the spurs of the Eastern Sayan Mountains. This location creates picturesque landscapes and determines the diversity of natural zones in the surrounding area.

Within the city and its suburbs are several major parks and natural areas: the "Gremyachaya Gryada" eco-park, the "Roev Ruchey" flora and fauna park, the "Bobrovy Log" fun park, as well as observation decks on Nikolayevskaya Sopka and "Tsary-Ryba" (King Fish), offering panoramic views of the Yenisei and surroundings.
