History of the Krasnoyarsk Circus: From Tents to a Winter Stationary Building

Circus performances in Krasnoyarsk have a long history — the first mentions of wandering performers touring the city date back to 1886. For a long time, the circus existed as a seasonal summer tent, which was erected for touring periods and taken down with the onset of cold weather. After the construction of the Siberian Railway, the circus became one of the most beloved entertainments for Krasnoyarsk residents, and the need for a permanent building grew with each passing year.

The first heated building was constructed in 1917 near the Bishop's House — it opened on August 13, 1918. But a true milestone in the history of the Krasnoyarsk Circus came half a century later: on December 18, 1971, a new permanent building opened, which continues to operate to this day. The Krasnoyarsk Circus became one of the oldest stationary circuses in Siberia and the Far East — the only one that functions year-round in harsh climatic conditions.

The "Eight-Sided Pearl": Architecture of the Building

The new circus building received the unofficial name "Eight-Sided Pearl" — for its characteristic shape and recognizable appearance. This is a unique design for Soviet circus architecture: an octagonal floor plan with a domed roof, decorative elements, and a vibrant facade. The building stands out against the urban landscape and serves as a landmark for residents of the Sovetsky District.

During the Soviet era, the Krasnoyarsk Circus was one of the most visited cultural institutions in the city — attracting up to a million spectators per year. Over more than 30 years of operation, many Russian stars performed at the arena, including the Zapashny brothers. Since 1971, the circus has been open year-round — it is a permanent winter building capable of hosting visitors in any season.
