Starting in December 2023, the Sundhnúkur volcano entered a phase of intense activity. According to seismological data, eruptions occurred nine times from December 2023 to April 2025, making it an unprecedented series for this region. Each episode was accompanied by the formation of giant fissures and powerful magma discharges. For example, the August 23, 2024 eruption resulted in a 4-kilometer-long fissure from which lava erupted. Grindavík: A Town on the Front Line of Fire

The series of eruptions led to serious destruction in the western part of the town, turning Grindavík into a "ghost town". This volcano is located just 7 kilometers from Grindavík and 30 kilometers from Keflavík International Airport, making its activity critical for the region's transport infrastructure. Another important site is the Geldingadalir volcano, which began erupting on March 19, 2021, after nearly 800 years of dormancy. The Geldingadalir eruption attracted the attention of scientists and tourists from around the world, becoming the first eruption in centuries on the peninsula that could be observed so close to populated areas.
Blue Lagoon Between Geothermal Paradise and Volcanic Threat
The famous geothermal spa resort Blue Lagoon, located in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula, also fell victim to the elements. The landscape around the resort was formed in 1226 after a grand eruption of the Eldborg volcano, and the lagoon itself uses geothermal water, which is a byproduct of a nearby power plant. However, in November 2024, due to the threat of eruption from the Sundhnúkur volcano, the resort was completely evacuated. Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon were evacuated multiple times in 2023–2024, demonstrating how closely Iceland's tourism and everyday life are intertwined with its geological instability.
