Basaltic lava flows slowly moved down the valley, forming a new lava field named Fagradalshraun.
The second eruption started August 1, 2022 — this time in the neighboring Meradalir valley, a few kilometers northeast of the first epicenter. The third eruption occurred July 10, 2023 on Litli-Hrútur mountain. All three events were fissure eruptions accompanied by basaltic lava flows without explosive ash emissions — making them relatively safe for close-range observation.
How to Get to the Volcano from Reykjavik
The drive from Reykjavik to parking areas at the foot of Fagradalsfjall takes about 45–60 minutes by car. The route follows Highway 427 (Reykjanesbraut), then a turnoff to parking lots P1 or P2. From the parking areas, hiking trails lead to the eruption area, ranging from 7 to 10 kilometers one way — depending on which eruption is active and where the safe route is located.
