Eruption Chronology: 2023–2025
Modern volcanic activity on Reykjanes began in 2021 with the Fagradalsfjall eruption, which attracted thousands of tourists. But the real crisis unfolded later. In November 2023, a series of earthquakes with magnitudes up to 5.2 triggered the evacuation of Grindavik. And on January 14, 2024, an eruption at the foot of Hagafell breached the anti-lava defenses and destroyed three houses in Grindavik.
The January 2024 eruption was smaller in scale than previous ones, but the fissure opened less than 100 meters from Grindavik. This created an unprecedented situation: incandescent flows moved directly toward the town, and hastily erected protective berms could only divert part of the lava. The 2023–2025 eruption series became the first case in over 50 years where an eruption destroyed homes in an Icelandic settlement.
On May 29, 2024, the eighth eruption in this area in three years occurred. Each new event brings a fresh batch of magma from the depths — fissures open in different locations, altering the landscape and creating new threats to infrastructure. Grindavik and its surroundings were evacuated multiple times in 2023–2024. Route 427, connecting the town to Reykjavik, was periodically closed due to lava flows. The Blue Lagoon — the famous geothermal resort — was closed for months during peak activity. Local authorities erected protective berms, but they do not guarantee safety during powerful eruptions.
