Magadan Square — online webcam
Magadan Square — online webcam and construction of new neighborhoods
Magadan Square is the main square of the city of Magadan, which is currently undergoing active development. The real-time online camera shows a large construction site with the erection of multi-story reinforced concrete residential buildings. In the background, you can see finished houses with colorful facades — red, blue, white, and orange elements. In the distance, hills rise against the sky, characteristic of the coastal landscape of this region.
History of Magadan Square
Sobornaya Square is one of the oldest squares in Magadan, which began to be developed no less than 90 years ago. For a long time it was called Lenin Square, and only on January 28, 2010 was it renamed Sobornaya by a resolution of the city mayor's office. This name was assigned to it thanks to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity located here — the main Orthodox church of the city, which was built in 2008.
Attractions of Sobornaya Square
The square is considered the main one and is a good starting point for a walk through the central part of the city. Here are located the iconic landmarks of Magadan:
In the center of the square stands the "Mask of Sorrow" memorial — a monument to the victims of political repression, created by sculptor Ernst Neizvestny and architect Kamil Kozaev. This is one of the most famous memorials in Russia, dedicated to the memory of Gulag prisoners.
In July 2015, a monument to Saint Innocent of Moscow was erected on the square — a missionary and educator who played an important role in the history of Russian America and the Far East.
One of the characteristic buildings on the square is the house with a spire on the corner of Lenin Avenue and Portovaya Street, built back in 1947. This is an example of post-war development of the city that has survived to this day.
What is being built at Magadan Square
The real-time online camera shows a large-scale construction site in the foreground. Modern multi-story residential buildings made of reinforced concrete are being erected here. Construction materials are scattered around the site: boards, rebar, pipes, piles of soil. A green portable toilet has been installed, and workers can be seen on the roof of one of the buildings.
In the background of the camera, you can see residential buildings that have already been commissioned with bright facades — red, blue, white, and orange elements. This is modern residential development that is changing the appearance of central Magadan. In the bottom right corner of the image is the logo of the construction company carrying out the work.
View of the surroundings — hills and the Sea of Okhotsk
Magadan Square is located on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, in Nagaevo Bay. The cityscape stretches toward the hills and opens up a view of the water area. From panoramic points of the square, you can see the hills and the Sea of Okhotsk, which makes this place not only a transportation hub but also a visual center of the city.
Near the House of Soviets building, there is a panoramic view from Sobornaya Square of the central streets and neighborhoods of Magadan. This allows you to appreciate the scale of the port city spread along the shore of the cold Sea of Okhotsk.
Climate and weather in Magadan
Magadan is located in a zone of sharply continental climate with maritime features. Winters here are long and cold, summers are short and cool. The Sea of Okhotsk influences the weather — bringing winds, fog, and precipitation. In winter, the square is covered with snow, and during the polar night it is illuminated by artificial light.
In spring and summer, when the city emerges from the polar night, the square fills with sunlight. This is the best time to observe construction work and take walks through the central part of Magadan.
How to get to Magadan Square
Magadan Square is located in the central part of the city of Magadan, Magadan Oblast, Russia. It is the main square of the city, from which the central streets radiate — Lenin Avenue, Portovaya Street, and others.
You can reach the square by public transport — buses and minibuses running through the city center. For orientation, you can use the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity or the House of Soviets building — they are clearly visible from different points in the center.
