Aspen — the jewel of the Rocky Mountains

Aspen is not just a town in the Colorado mountains. It is a place where ski culture has merged with art, history, and celebrity visitors into a single whole. Located in the Roaring Fork Valley at an altitude of about 2,400 meters above sea level, Aspen attracts travelers from all over the world year-round. In summer, there are hiking trails and music festivals; in winter — legendary slopes that have been skied for nearly 80 years.

Aspen Square — the heart of the ski resort

The pedestrian Aspen Square is where the life of the town pulses. This is exactly where our webcam is pointed, and for good reason: the square sits at the intersection of Cooper Avenue and Hunter Street, in the very center of Aspen. It is a crossroads where skiers in bright jackets, locals with dogs, and tourists with cameras all meet.

On both sides of the square stand multi-story buildings with balconies — hotels and residential buildings, many of which are built in Victorian style. In winter, the square is especially picturesque: snow on the roofs, lantern lights, and hot steam from the open pools of nearby hotels. In summer, the lawns turn green, street cafes operate, and music plays.

Silver Queen Gondola — glass gates to the summit

In the center of the frame, in the background, you can see the glass station of the Silver Queen Gondola — one of Aspen's most recognizable landmarks. This gondola was opened in 1986 and has since become the main transportation corridor between the town and the ski slopes.

The ride on the Silver Queen Gondola to the summit takes just 14 minutes — previously, chairlifts took 30 minutes. The gondola lifts passengers to an altitude of 11,212 feet (3,418 m), offering a panorama of the entire region. At the summit is the Sun Deck — a viewing platform with views of Highland Bowl and the Elk Mountains.

The gondola station starts from Gondola Plaza in the very center of town, allowing tourists to ascend the mountain right from the city — without transfers or long drives. This is one of the details that makes Aspen unique among the world's ski resorts.

Aspen Mountain (Ajax) — a Colorado ski legend

Aspen Mountain is part of the Richmond Ridge range, which stretches 10 miles south at an altitude of about 11,000 feet. The base elevation of the mountain is 7,945 feet (2,422 m), and the summit reaches 11,212 feet (3,418 m). The vertical drop creates ideal skiing conditions — the runs are diverse and suitable for both beginners and experts.

The first lift on Aspen Mountain opened on January 11, 1947 — it was the first ski resort in the Roaring Fork Valley. Since then, Ajax Mountain has become a symbol of Aspen and a pilgrimage site for skiers from around the world.

Resort history — from silver mines to world-class

The Aspen ski resort was founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke and veterans of the 10th Mountain Division. These soldiers, who had fought in mountain battles during World War II, brought their passion for skiing and knowledge of the mountains to the valley. They were the ones who cut the first runs and installed the first lifts.

Aspen is one of the oldest ski resorts in North America, with nearly 70 years of skiing history. Aspen Mountain (Ajax) was the first of the four mountains of the Aspen Snowmass resort, laying the foundation for Aspen as a ski destination. Today the resort includes four mountains, but Ajax remains the most famous and central.

Aspen became the first ski resort in the United States to allow snowboarding — this happened on April 1, 2001. Before that, snowboarders were outcasts at many resorts, and Aspen became a pioneer in legitimizing the sport.

Climate and weather in Aspen

Aspen sits high in the Rocky Mountains, and the climate here is alpine, with cold winters and mild summers. In winter, temperatures can drop to -20°C, but there are more than 300 sunny days per year. Snow in Aspen is a special point of pride: the resort receives an average of about 300 inches (762 cm) of snow per season, and the dry mountain air makes it incredibly light and fluffy.
