From Silver Mines to Ski Capital

The history of this city begins not with skis, but with pickaxes. Aspen was founded in 1879 during the Colorado Silver Rush, when a group of prospectors discovered rich silver veins in the Roaring Fork Valley. The settlement was originally named Ute City after the Ute Indians who inhabited these lands, but in 1880 the name Aspen was chosen — "Aspen". By 1893, the city's population reached 10,000–16,000 people, and the town had schools, banks, churches, an opera house, and restaurants.

The silver industry boom occurred between 1887 and 1893, when Aspen produced one-sixth of all silver in the United States and was the third-largest city in Colorado. In 1892, the largest silver nugget in history weighing 2,060 pounds (934 kg) and containing 93% pure silver was found at the Smuggler mine. When the silver market collapsed in 1893, the city experienced a long decline, but in the 20th century it found a new identity.

Four Slopes — Four Personalities

Aspen is rightfully considered the first ski resort in America. The first national ski championships were held here in March 1941. During World War II, the 10th Mountain Division — an elite U.S. mountain infantry unit — trained in Aspen. Two veterans of this division founded the first ski resort here, ushering in a new era.

Today, Aspen is four ski areas with different personalities. Aspen Mountain (Ajax) rises directly above the town, offering steep runs with views of downtown. Aspen Highlands is famous for its cross-country trails and the legendary Highland Bowl. Buttermilk is the ideal place for beginners and the venue for X Games. Snowmass is the largest of the four, with extensive terrain for all skill levels.

Architecture and Atmosphere of Downtown

Historic downtown Aspen has preserved the spirit of the Victorian era. Main Street is paved with brick, and restored 19th-century buildings stand on both sides. Here you'll find the Wheeler Opera House — an opera theater built in 1889 that today hosts music and theater events.

Aspen became a celebrity haven in the early years of the resort — actor Gary Cooper was one of the first stars to come here to ski and escape the pressures of fame. Red Mountain is known as "Billionaire Mountain" — it is home to residences of billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell. At peak season, up to 30,000 people arrive in Aspen, despite a permanent population of about 7,000.

Natural Attractions Around Aspen

Maroon Bells — the two peaks Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak — are among the most photographed mountains in the Rockies. Their reflection in Maroon Lake has become a symbol of Colorado. The Roaring Fork Valley, where Aspen is located, is surrounded by the wilderness of White River National Forest.

The Roaring Fork River flows through the city, offering fishing and rafting opportunities in summer. Hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails are laid out around Aspen, including routes to alpine lakes and passes. Elevations here range from 2,400 meters in town to over 4,000 meters on the surrounding peaks.

Seasons and Climate

Aspen offers two distinct seasons. In winter (November — April), the city transforms into a ski capital with heavy snowfall — an average of about 7.5 meters of snow falls annually on the slopes. Summer (June — September) attracts tourists with hiking, cycling, music festivals, and food festivals.

Fall in Aspen is golden aspen (from which the city got its name), when the slopes are covered with a yellow-orange carpet. Spring is a transitional period when the ski season continues at higher elevations while trees are already blooming in the valley.

Cultural Life and Festivals

The Aspen Music Festival, held since 1949, turns the city into a world capital of classical music every summer. Concerts take place in the Benedict Tent and other venues. In winter, the city hosts the Aspen Music Festival and School, bringing together students and masters from around the world.

X Games Aspen, held at Buttermilk since 2002, have become an annual event in the world of extreme sports. Aspen Food & Wine Classic brings together the best chefs and winemakers. The city is home to the Aspen Art Museum with a contemporary art collection and a unique building designed by architect Shigeru Ban.
