Zheleznodorozhny is one of the largest districts of the Balashikha urban district in Moscow Oblast. Today it is a densely built residential area with well-developed infrastructure, but just eighty years ago there was a small village in its place. The district's history is closely connected to the railway: in 1862, the Moscow–Nizhny Novgorod railway passed through these lands, and the station was named Obiralovka after the village, the first mention of which dates back to 1573.

In 1938, the workers' settlement of Obiralovka was renamed Zheleznodorozhny, and in 1952 it was granted city status.
