History of Big Bucket Bay

Big Bucket Bay is a body of water, part of the Vyborg Bay, along the banks of which lies the city of Vyborg in Leningrad Oblast. It is connected by the Fortress Strait to Vyborg Bay and Zashchitnaya Bay.

The Finnish name of the bay is Salakka-lahti, which means "smelt bay" — apparently, fish of this kind were once caught here in large numbers.

Along the embankment of Big Bucket Bay there were warehouse facilities, the largest of which was the building of the "Savo-Karelian Wholesale Trade" company. Among other structures, important places were occupied by the Sergeyevs' revenue house, the "SOK" company building, and the Vyborg bus station.

Geography and Natural Features

Big Bucket Bay is a natural bay formed by geological processes and the impact of surf waves. The shores of the bay are covered with forests and meadows, the bottom is covered with sand and gravel. The water in the bay has moderate salinity and is notable for its transparency.

The bay is part of a unique coastal ecosystem where freshwater and marine environments combine. The bay is home to species typical of the Baltic Sea, such as sprat, Baltic herring, pollock, and pike-perch.

From the Big Bucket Bay embankment, there is a view of St. Olaf's Tower — the main symbol of the city. The tower, built during the period of fortress construction, serves as a lighthouse and landmark for ships. At the foot of the tower there are a monastery and a museum, open to visitors.

On the embankment you can also see a fountain in the middle of the bay. The fountain serves as an architectural element and an attraction for vacationers. The water in the fountain comes from an artesian well.

The Big Bucket Bay embankment is located near the Vyborg railway station. From Vokzalnaya Square, you need to head towards the embankment along Leningradsky Prospekt.

You can walk from the Vyborg railway station to the Big Bucket Bay embankment in 30-40 minutes. From the metro, you can take a bus or taxi. Parking near the embankment is available.

Recreation Area and Infrastructure

The Big Bucket Bay embankment has pedestrian and bicycle paths, as well as benches for relaxation. The area is equipped with lighting and garbage collection systems.

In the recreation area, you can organize picnics, walks, and photo sessions. The shoreline is a popular place for tourists and local residents.
