History of the Market Square — from Fish Market to the Heart of the City

Vyborg Market Square is not just a dot on the map — it is a place where centuries intertwine. Located in the very center of the medieval part of the city, it originally bore a completely different name. The square was called the Fish Market, and this was no coincidence: fish brought in from the Gulf of Finland and local waters was traded here in a bustling commerce. Over time, the square's function expanded — it became the main trading space of Vyborg, a role it retains to this day.

In the 18th–19th centuries, the tower became a powder magazine and arsenal, and later it was converted into a city prison. They were erected in the early 20th century, in 1900–1904 to the design of architect K. L. Ikonen. The new rows replaced the old wooden stalls that no longer matched the scale and status of Vyborg as a major trading city.

Inside, there were 24 trading stalls and shops — everything one might need could be purchased here. The architectural solution was modern for its time: stone structures, large windows, functional layout. Today, the trading rows continue to serve their original purpose — trade still takes place on the square, only now seasonal pavilions with red and white canopies have taken their place.

Legends and Mysteries of the Medieval Square

Like any place with centuries of history, Market Square has accumulated legends. One of the most famous tales is connected precisely with the Round Tower. According to legend, when the tower housed a prison, the wife of a Swedish commandant languished in one of the cells. After her death, the ghost of the unhappy woman was said to haunt the tower. Local residents still tell this story to tourists, giving the square a special atmosphere of mystery.

Such legends are not merely folklore. They reflect the real history of a place where prisoners were indeed held within prison walls, and the life of medieval Vyborg was full of dramatic events. Vyborg is located in the Leningrad Region, approximately 140 kilometers from St. Petersburg. Electric trains "Allegro" run from Finland Station — this is the fastest and most comfortable way. From Vyborg Railway Station, you can walk to Market Square in 15–20 minutes through the historic center.

By car from St. Petersburg, take the "Scandinavia" highway (M-10 / A-181). The journey takes about two hours without traffic. Parking in the center of Vyborg is limited, so it is better to leave the car on the outskirts and walk — this will allow you to appreciate the medieval architecture of the city, which begins literally just beyond the railway station.
