Most na Soči, Slovenia — Online Webcam
Most na Soči: where this webcam is located
In western Slovenia, in the municipality of Tolmin, lies the small town of Most na Soči — a place where two mountain rivers, the Soča and Idrija, converge, and an impressive stone bridge spans the emerald water. The live webcam is installed right on this bridge and broadcasts a panorama of the mountain valley in real time. Viewers can see the famous turquoise water of the Soča, surrounded by forested slopes of the Julian Alps — one of the most picturesque corners of Alpine Slovenia.
History of the bridge over the Soča River
The bridge over the Soča at this location has a long history. The first structure appeared here before World War I, and the current bridge stands approximately 17 meters above the water. But the main landmark of the region is the famous Solkan Bridge, an arched stone railway bridge built in 1905. It is recognized as the largest stone railway bridge in the world, with a height of 219.7 meters. In mid-August, traditional bridge diving events are held here annually — a tradition reminiscent of the famous jumps in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Why the water in the Soča is emerald green
The Soča River is considered one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, and its unique emerald-green hue is neither a photo filter nor an anomaly. This color is caused by a high content of minerals and chalk, as well as light reflection from the chalky and clay rocks of the riverbed. During the warm season, intense photosynthesis of the algae Cladophora glomerata enhances the green spectrum, while the water remains crystal clear. Rare fish species inhabit the Soča — the Balkan trout and grayling, found in only a few places in Europe.
Julian Alps: the mountain landscape beyond the river
The Soča River originates in the Julian Alps and winds through gorges and alpine meadows, creating one of the most beautiful valleys on the continent. In the background of the camera view, mountains covered in dense forest are visible, with rocky outcrops showing through. This is part of the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve — the first biosphere territory in Slovenia. The country's highest peak, Mount Triglav at 2,864 meters, is a symbol of Slovenia and is depicted on the flag and coat of arms. Half of Slovenia's territory is covered by forests, and the Julian Alps region is particularly rich in mountain forests and natural water bodies.
What to see in Most na Soči
The town of Most na Soči is not just about the bridge and the river. Here you will find restored remains of a Roman house, protected by the state. At the cemetery stands the Church of Saint Maurus, and the parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Lucy and belongs to the Diocese of Koper. On the far bank of the river, visible on the camera, there is a small settlement with residential buildings — this is part of the urban development of Most na Soči, which traces its history back to a medieval settlement on a rocky ridge above the confluence of two rivers.
Active recreation in the Soča Valley
The Soča Valley is a leading destination for ecotourism and water sports in Slovenia. Rafting, boat tours, and hiking along the riverbanks are popular here. Between Most na Soči, Tolmin, and Kobarid, cycling routes of varying difficulty have been laid out. The webcam provides an opportunity to assess river conditions before your trip — see the water level, its color, and the mountain weather.
What you can see on the webcam
The camera is installed on the bridge over the Soča River and broadcasts a view of the water expanse in the mountain valley. The central part of the frame is occupied by the green surface of the Soča — that famous emerald hue that makes this river unique in Europe. In the background rise mountains covered in dense forest, with rocky outcrops visible — these are the slopes of the Julian Alps. On the far bank, there is a small settlement with residential buildings and houses. On the left bank, a modern building is visible. In the foreground on the right — a grassy bank with tall grass and reeds. The sky is partly cloudy. The camera operates in real time, allowing you to observe changes in lighting and weather in the mountain valley.
