Dam on the Soča River in Most na Soči — Webcam Online
Live Stream from the Dam on the Soča River
This online webcam is installed in western Slovenia, in the village of Most na Soči, and is aimed at the Doblar hydroelectric dam. The frame shows a panorama of a mountain valley, where the meandering Soča River carries its famous turquoise waters between green meadows and forested slopes. The camera operates in real time, allowing you to observe changes in lighting, water levels, and weather phenomena in this picturesque corner of Slovenian Primorska.
History of the Doblar Hydroelectric Plant Dam
The dam you see on the camera was built around 1940 and celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2025. It is one of the oldest hydroelectric power plants on the Soča River, which still produces electricity. The Doblar plant created a small artificial reservoir that is clearly visible on the webcam upstream from the dam. In recent years, there has been discussion about turning the power station into a hydro energy museum, which highlights the historical value of this facility.
Why the Water in the Soča is Turquoise
The rich turquoise-emerald color of the water is the hallmark of the Soča River and the main reason why thousands of people watch this online camera every day. This phenomenon is explained by suspended limestone particles in the water — so-called "rock flour", which is formed by the grinding of glaciers and mountain streams against the rock bed. Microscopic calcite crystals reflect the blue and green spectrum of sunlight, creating that very aquamarine hue that earned the Soča the nickname "The Emerald Beauty". The intensity of the color changes depending on water level, time of day, and weather conditions — which is why the real-time web camera never shows the same picture twice.
Geographical Location: Confluence of Two Rivers
Most na Soči is situated on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Soča and Idrijca rivers. It is here, a few hundred meters downstream from the dam, that the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Soča meet the darker waters of the Idrijca. The camera shows how the river flows through a wide valley surrounded by forested slopes of the Julian Alps. The village of Most na Soči is a small settlement in the Tolmin municipality, serving as a starting point for tourists traveling through the Soča Valley toward the Vršič Pass or the Triglav National Park.
Sights of Most na Soči
The main historical landmark of the village is the Church of St. Lucia (Sveta Lucija), which gave the place its name. Until 1955, the settlement was officially called "Sveta Lucija ob Soči" — Saint Lucy on the Soča. The church stands on a hill and is visible from the road leading from Tolmin. Next to it is an old cemetery with characteristic Slovenian gravestones. In the village itself, traditional stone houses with reddish-brown tile roofs have been preserved — you can see them on the webcam on the right slope of the valley.
Fish of the Soča River: Marble Trout
The waters of the Soča and the lake near the dam are home to a unique marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) — endemic to the rivers of the Adriatic basin, found only only in a few waterways in Slovenia and Italy. This fish can reach a length of over a meter and a weight exceeding 20 kilograms. Besides the marble trout, the river is home to grayling, rainbow trout, European grayling, and lake trout. In summer, when the water warms up, you can watch large fish holding in the current near the dam — this is a favorite spot for sport fishermen practicing fly-and-release fishing.
Seasonal Changes in the Soča Valley
The Most na Soči webcam shows how the landscape changes throughout the year. In spring, during snowmelt in the Alps, the river swells, acquiring a milky-gray hue due to increased suspended sediment. In summer the water becomes crystal-clear turquoise, and the slopes turn lush green. In autumn, the deciduous forests turn golden and crimson, creating a contrast with the emerald water. In winter, the temperature in the valley rarely stays below zero for long, but frost is possible during anticyclones, and snow caps the surrounding peaks. At night, the camera captures the lights of the village and rare car headlights, and on clear nights — the starry sky above the mountains.
What You Can See on the Camera
The online camera broadcasts a panoramic view of the mountain valley of the Soča River with the Doblar hydroelectric dam in the foreground. In the center of the frame is the meandering riverbed with its characteristic turquoise-green water flowing through green meadows and farmland. The hillsides are covered with dense deciduous forest that changes color with the seasons. On the right slope sits the rural village of Most na Soči with its reddish-brown roof houses. In the depths of the valley, other settlements nestled among forests and fields are visible. In the foreground, the branches of deciduous trees create the effect of presence. In the distance, you can see roads connecting the settlements of the Soča Valley and the mountain ranges of the Julian Alps.
