Perm — a city on the Kama River

Perm is one of the largest cities in Russia, located in the Cis-Ural region on the picturesque banks of the Kama River, downstream from the confluence of the Chusovaya River. It is the administrative center of Perm Krai, a million-plus city with a population of about 1,027,000 people (2023 data). The city stretches along the Kama for 65 kilometers, making it the third-largest city in the country by area after Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Perm is a major transportation hub on the Trans-Siberian Railway and a large river port. It is the northernmost million-plus city in the world not located on a sea coast — only Saint Petersburg lies further north among similar cities.

History of Foundation and Development

The founding date of Perm is considered to be 1723, when, by order of Vasily Nikitich Tatishchev, the Yegoshikha copper smelter was established here. Although the first mentions of these territories in chronicles date back to 1113 as "Permaa," it was the construction of the plant that marked the beginning of the city.

Throughout its history, Perm has changed its name several times. From 1940 to 1957, the city was named Molotov in honor of Soviet politician Vyacheslav Molotov, after which the historical name was restored. In 2026, Perm will celebrate its 303rd anniversary.

Population and Ethnic Composition

According to the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, the ethnic composition of Perm is dominated by Russians — 93.0%. Among other ethnic groups are Tatars (2.6%), Komi-Permyaks, Bashkirs, and Tajiks (about 1% each). The city continues to be multi-ethnic, preserving the traditions of various cultures.

Climate and Natural Features

Perm is located in a zone of temperate continental climate with long, cold winters and warm summers. Due to its complex terrain, the city has many observation points offering panoramic views of the Kama and surrounding areas. The elevation differences within the city limits reach significant values, creating picturesque landscapes.

Economy and Transportation

Perm is a major industrial center of the Urals. Machine building, petrochemicals, wood processing, and food industry are well developed here. The city is an important railway junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway, connecting the European part of Russia with Siberia and the Far East. The river port on the Kama provides freight and passenger transportation.

Attractions and Culture

The historical center of Perm is the smallest district of the city, but it is here that the main attractions are concentrated. Perm Esplanade, the opera and ballet theater, churches, and monuments attract tourists. The city is rich in museums, among which the Perm State Art Gallery stands out with its unique collection of Perm wooden architecture.

Thanks to its complex terrain, Perm has many observation points offering panoramic views of the city and surroundings. The tourist flow to the city is growing year by year, confirming the increasing popularity of Perm as a tourist destination.
