The name Canniggione derives from the Sardinian word "cannile" (reed), connected to a legend and the historical landscape: the area where the waterfront now stands was once marshy reed thickets, drained in the 20th century for infrastructure construction. Legends tell that before the modern waterfront was built, impenetrable swamps overgrown with reeds dominated here.
