History of the Annunciation Church: from the monastery to the present day
The Annunciation Church in Ulyanovsk is a place with a deep history rooted in the late 17th century. The first church on this site was consecrated on January 5, 1698. A Pokrovsky Monastery operated alongside the church, which lasted until approximately 1934. During the Soviet years, the building fell into disrepair and religious services were not held.
The modern wooden church in the Zasviazhye district began its revival in 1995 with the installation of a small panel chapel, where daily akathists were read before the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God. Construction was carried out under the blessing of Metropolitan Prokl, and the process was overseen by the first rector — Archpriest Georgy Khalimonov, who passed away in 2010. On April 25, 1997, on Good Friday, the first service was held — the removal of the Shroud, and on Easter night the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated.
Architecture and construction: wooden architecture of the Volga region
The Annunciation Church is considered one of the most beautiful wooden churches in the Volga region. During its construction, a surviving portion of the log frame from a church dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God "Sign" from the Karamzin family estate in the Mainsky district of Ulyanovsk Oblast was used — this log frame was originally built in 1901. The church was built from 1995 to 1999, and today it is the only cultural and architectural monument of the 20th century in the Zasviazhye district of Ulyanovsk.
The church is located at 18 Sholmova Street, right on the banks of the Sviyaga River. This area in the Dalneye Zasviazhye district features a picturesque landscape — offering views of the river and surrounding expanses. The great consecration of the church was performed by Metropolitan Feofan of Simbirsk and Novospassky on February 15, 2015.
Shrines and chapels of the church
The main shrine that draws pilgrims to the Annunciation Church is the Zadonsk Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, brought here on June 19. It is one of the most revered icons of the Simbirsk Diocese. Most of the icons in the church were donated by parishioners themselves, creating a special spiritual atmosphere in this place.
The church has several chapels: the central one — dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, as well as chapels in honor of the Bogolyubsk Icon of the Mother of God, Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess, the venerable Xenophon and Maria with their children Arkady and John. Each chapel has its own history and spiritual significance for the faithful.
The role of the church in the life of Ulyanovsk
The Annunciation Church has become a spiritual center for residents of Dalneye Zasviazhye — one of the residential districts of Ulyanovsk. Regular services, sacraments of baptism and marriage are held here, and church schools for children and adults operate. The church was built through the efforts of the entire lay community — from the first rector to ordinary parishioners who made their contributions to the construction.
Its location on the high bank of the Sviyaga makes the church a prominent landmark. On clear days, its domes are visible from various points in the Zasviazhye district. This place attracts not only believers but also enthusiasts of wooden architecture and tourists interested in the history of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk.
Surroundings of the church: the Sviyaga River and Dalneye Zasviazhye
The Annunciation Church stands on the banks of the Sviyaga — a right tributary of the Volga that flows through Ulyanovsk. The Dalneye Zasviazhye district is located on the right bank of the river and is a residential area built mainly in the 1970s–1990s. Despite the modern development, it is here that a piece of antiquity has been preserved — a wooden church reminiscent of the traditions of Russian ecclesiastical architecture.
In the vicinity of the church, one can observe the typical nature of the Middle Volga region: a broad river valley, floodplain meadows, and hills covered with mixed forests. In winter, the Sviyaga freezes, turning into a picturesque icy landscape, and in summer the riverbanks become a recreation spot for local residents.
